SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Citadel basketball team used a late second-half run to beat USC Upstate 88-81 on Saturday. The Bulldogs clinched the Palmetto State Shootout title with the win and improved to 5-2, sealing their best start to a season since the 2004-05 campaign.
Senior
Derrick Henry notched a career-high 30 points to lead all scorers and
Quinton Marshall tossed in 22 points to fuel the victory. Henry and Marshall combined to make 17 of The Citadel's 31 field goals as the Bulldogs shot 44.3 percent from the field. Marshall scored 61 points over three games at the Palmetto State Shootout.
Senior point guard
P.J. Boutte narrowly missed earning his third double-double of the season, without scoring a point. The 5-foot-7 floor general pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds and added nine assists and three steals.
The game was back and forth throughout and every time The Citadel needed a bucket, Henry seemed to deliver. With the Bulldogs clinging to a 35-34 lead in the first half, the graduate senior cashed in a couple free throws and buried a pair of contested three-pointers over a two-minute stretch to push his team in front 43-36. The Citadel took a 45-41 advantage into halftime.
The Spartans battled back in the second half and grabbed an 80-78 lead with 3:11 remaining, but again head coach
Duggar Baucom's squad responded. Freshman
Zane Najdawi sunk a hook shot in the lane on the ensuing offensive possession to tie it up.
After another clutch jumper from Henry, Najdawi scored again down low to hand the Bulldogs an 84-81 cushion they would never surrender. Najdawi finished with 11 points off the bench. A game-clinching defensive stop by The Citadel was finished off with a tough rebound from Henry and his free throws in the final seconds squashed any chance of an Upstate comeback.
The Bulldogs continue their road swing with a trip to Colorado Springs, Colorado, where they face Air Force at 9 p.m. on Wednesday. The Citadel is 2-2 all-time vs. the Falcons with the last victory coming in 1994.
