DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. - The Citadel improved to 7-4 with an emphatic 99-87 road win over Bethune-Cookman on Wednesday night. The Bulldogs' 99 points were the most points scored at Moore Gymnasium since Feb. 11, 1991.
Â
"I'm really proud of the guys and how they competed against a big, strong and athletic team on the road," head coach
Duggar Baucom said. "I thought we took the fight to them, competed for loose balls and on the boards and played at our pace."
Â
Junior
Brian White picked up his fifth career double-double with 19 points and a career-high 13 rebounds to lead the winning effort. Senior
Derrick Henry chipped in a game-high 23 points and junior
Warren Sledge poured in a career-high 20 points. The Citadel now has seven nonconference wins for the first time since the 2005-06 campaign.
Â
Henry has now scored 18 points or more five times this season and the Bulldogs are 5-0 in those games. He shot 50 percent from the field and pulled down a career-best eight rebounds. Sledge was deadly from the beyond the arc, burying five treys, including four in the first half to push The Citadel in front.
Â
Defensively, The Citadel forced 17 turnovers and scored 25 points off those turnovers. The Bulldogs have won the turnover battle in nine of their first 11 games. The Citadel is now 4-0 all-time vs. Bethune-Cookman as the Bulldogs picked up their second true road win of the season.
Â
Baucom's team built its lead with a game-changing 17-4 run midway through the first half fueled by Sledge and Henry. Sledge buried a corner trey, then
P.J. Boutte collected a steal and dished to Henry for an and-one three-point play. The six-point swing surged the Bulldogs in front for the remainder of the game. Boutte finished with nine assists, six points, four rebounds and three steals in a gritty all-around performance.
Â
The Citadel jumped ahead by 12 late in the first half and took a 51-39 lead into the break. Henry scored 15 of his 23 in the opening frame behind a 7-of-10 effort from the field. The Bulldogs shot 51.2 percent from the floor and made 21 field goals in the first half.
Â
The Citadel kept its foot on the gas in the second half to secure its fourth win over a Division I opponent this season. Owning a 64-50 lead, the Bulldogs put together a quick 6-0 run that began with a ferocious putback slam from White. After a sweet no-look pass in transition from Boutte found
Bobby Duncan for a layup, The Citadel led by 20.
Â
Bethune-Cookman managed to cut the deficit to 12 in the final minutes, but timely free throws from Henry and Sledge delivered the Bulldogs their second consecutive win. The Bulldogs now hit the road again for a trip to Buies Creek, North Carolina, where they'll clash with Campbell on Saturday. It will be The Citadel's first time facing the Fighting Camels since 1983.
