Opening Tip
National Signing Day was Wednesday and we're excited about the future of the Class of 2019.

The 12th Annual Alumni Basketball Game takes center stage on Saturday afternoon, immediately following our home contest against UNC Greensboro, which tips off at 1 pm.

We salute junior closer Skylar Hunter for being named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association preseason All-America third team and the preseason second team for the Southern Conference, as did shortstop Johnathan Stokes.  And, of course, baseball opens on a week from today, and if you don't yet have your season pass, give our ticket office a shout at 843/953-DOGS (3647) and we'll set you up.

We also salute Sarah Johnson, who established a new Citadel record in the 500 meters with a time of 1:19.10 as she took third place overall at the Captain's Invitational in Newport News, Va.

Congratulations are extended to our wrestling team who defeated VMI on Thursday night in Lexington, Va.  It always makes Spike smile whenever we defeat VMI in anything.

As you've come to expect, we have another solid issue full of news and notes, so enjoy and Go Bulldogs!!!

National Signing Day Inks 17 for Football
Coach Mike Houston announced on Wednesday the addition of 17 players who have signed National Letters of Intent and will join the Bulldog football program this year.

The recruiting class is slanted towards defense, with 12 players recruited on that side of the line of scrimmage and six being defensive linemen. Three newcomers are being brought in on offense including Jordan Black, who spent his first three seasons at Vidalia (Ga.) High School as a wide receiver before moving to quarterback and earning all-state honors from the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

The coaching staff focused on the Southeast for this year's class, with all 17 players hailing from the Carolinas, Georgia and Alabama. The Palmetto State leads the way with eight recruits including Lowcountry product Brady Cormier, a kicker from Beaufort High School. Seven come from Georgia and one each from Alabama and North Carolina, although Tar Heel native Kevin Graham attended high school in Georgia.

Four of the players from South Carolina (Tyler Davis, Rod Johnson, Aron Spann and Jordan Williams) were selected to play in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas, and Khafari Buffalo and Jalon Williams were in the North-South All-Star Game.

The commitment from Tyler Jackson continues The Citadel's recruiting success in Mobile, Ala. The Bulldogs have brought in a player from that city in each of the last four classes, with Jackson joining former high school teammates James Riley and Cam Jackson. Cam Mobley, a senior on the 2014 team, is also from Mobile but attended a different high school.

Black is a nephew of Pittsburgh Steeler great and NFL Hall of Famer Mel Blount. Isaiah Hawkins, a defensive lineman, is a cousin of Erik Kynard, Jr., who won a silver medal in the high jump at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

In addition to the players who signing NLIs with The Citadel, three other recruited student-athletes will also be attending The Military College of South Carolina. That group includes safety Donald Rutledge (Sumter/Crestwood), linebacker/long snapper Patrick Keefe (Fort Walton Beach, Fla./Choctawhatchee) and running back Donovan Ward (Columbia/Dreher).

Basketball Falls to Chattanooga & Mercer
ON THURSDAY NIGHT IN McALISTER FIELD HOUSE, Mercer forward T.J. Hallice scored 16 points to lead four players in double figures as the Bears completed a 76-53 victory over The Citadel.

Mercer closed the contest by hitting 32-of-55 (58.2%) from the floor and 8-of-19 (42.1%) from 3-point range. The Bears had a decisive edge in points in the paint (38-16) as well as second chance points (12-0), due in large part to 12 of the 34 rebounds coming on the offensive glass.

Ashton Moore kept The Citadel in the game during Mercer's early second half outburst as he singlehandedly scored 10 straight points during a 2:52 stretch.

The bright spot for the Bulldogs in the final 10 minutes of the frame was that they limited the Bears to 10 points. The Citadel managed 11 in that same stretch, including a 3-pointer by Brandon Thompson and five points from Marshall Harris III, as it dropped only its third game at home this season.

Moore led the Cadets in scoring with 19 points, converting 7-of-18 from the floor and 4-of-13 from beyond the arc. The four 3-pointers moved Moore into sixth on the school's all-time 3-point list as he passed Ryan Nesbit.

ON SATURDAY NIGHT IN CHATTANOOGA, Casey Jones notched a game-high 23 points as UTC completed a 78-73 victory over The Citadel at McKenzie Arena.

Ashton Moore led five Citadel players in double figures with his 18-point effort. He managed to hit 6-of-15 from the floor, converting four from beyond the arc, as he led the team in scoring for the 14th time this season.

Brian White, who finished 7-of-8 from the field en route to season-high 17 points, was also a solid presence on the board with a game-high six rebounds. He was joined in the paint by P.J. Horgan (10 points) and Quinton Marshall (10).

Point guard Warren Sledge came off the bench to close with 12 points and five assists, hitting 4-of-6 from the field and knocking down both 3-point attempts. The Citadel hit 27-of-46 (58.7%) from the field and was 7-of-13 from long distance. The Bulldogs also finished with a 24-22 edge in rebounds, hauling in 19 defensive.

Hunter Named to NCBWA Preseason All-America Team
Junior closer Skylar Hunter has been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association preseason All-America third team.

Hunter enters the 2015 campaign with a career total of 28 saves, only one behind Citadel all-time leader and Athletic Hall of Fame member Hank Kraft. Hunter tied the school record for most saves in a season with 15 a year ago, ranking first in the Southern Conference and tied for 11th nationally.

The right-hander from Hanahan allowed 22 hits and struck out 44 in 43.0 innings, posted an ERA of 1.67 and held opponents to a batting average of .152. Among his saves were two against nationally-ranked teams. He closed out a Bulldog win over No. 8 Louisville when he retired the final six batters including three strikeouts and finished off a victory over No. 6 South Carolina when he fanned the potential tie run in the ninth.

Hunter also picked up two wins last year in which he went a total of seven innings. He struck out four and did not allow a run in season-high four innings against eventual Super Regional qualifier College of Charleston and tossed three innings of two-hit shutout ball with three strikeouts against Coastal Carolina.

Hunter assumed the closer's role during the fall of his freshman season and proceeded to save 13 games to rank second in the SoCon and 20th in the country. The first Bulldog to record double figures in saves since Link Saunders in 2006, Hunter struck out 44 in 35.1 innings, an average of 11.21 per nine innings, and was named second team All-SoCon and to the Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-America squad.

Two other SoCon players - Western Carolina second baseman Brad Strong and Samford closer Andres Gracia - are also on the NCBWA preseason third team.

Stokes, Hunter Named to Preseason All-SoCon Team; Bulldogs Picked Sixth (and Seventh) in Preseason Polls
Senior shortstop Johnathan Stokes and junior closer Skylar Hunter have been named to the preseason All-Southern Conference second team in voting by the league's head coaches.

Stokes enters the 2015 season having started 131 of the last 133 games after taking over the shortstop spot towards the end of his freshman year. He has a career batting average of .272 with 25 doubles, seven home runs, 69 runs scored and 93 RBI.

The Cheraw native is looking to return to his offensive form from 2013 when he batted .309 and drove in 52 runs while starting all 60 games to help The Citadel reach the SoCon Tournament championship game.

A year ago Stokes saw his average drop to .254 but still drove in 36 runs and finished the regular season on a high note by driving in seven runs in a sweep over UNCG. He ranked fourth in the conference with six sacrifice flies and seventh with 152 assists.

Hunter has a career total of 28 saves, only one behind Citadel all-time leader and Athletic Hall of Fame member Hank Kraft. Hunter tied the school record for most saves in a season with 15 a year ago, ranking first in the Southern Conference and tied for 11th nationally.

The right-hander from Hanahan struck out 44 in 43.0 innings, posted an ERA of 1.67 and held opponents to a batting average of .152 during his sophomore campaign. In his first season as a Bulldog in 2013, Hunter saved 13 games to rank 20th in the country and was named second team All-SoCon and a member of the Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-America squad.

The Citadel was picked to finish sixth in the league's media poll and tied for seventh by the coaches. Western Carolina was picked first in both polls followed by Samford (second coaches; third media) and Mercer (third coaches; second media).

They Said It
"Having been a collegiate athlete and a cadet, I know what Citadel players are going through.  But on a larger scale, these players work hard every day to represent The Citadel and win games for their school. They deserve to be supported by fans and their fellow cadets, and I hope this event is the first step in making that a reality."

Dan Gowdown '98, a founder of Charleston Rental Properties, on the promotion of "Pack the Mac" Night

"The Citadel is excited to continue our long-standing and successful relationship with CLC. The partnership has resulted in steady growth since its inception, and we look forward to continuing our work with CLC. CLC is an industry-leader and has been a strong supporter of The Citadel's core values of 'Honor,' 'Duty' and 'Respect.' This long-term agreement will further allow for continued growth, strengthening of our brand and also help our loyal Bulldog fans show their Citadel pride in many different ways."

Director of Athletics Jim Senter, on the long-standing relationship with the Collegiate Licensing Company
