CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Citadel (10-12, 3-6) snapped a four-game skid in its series against VMI (6-14, 1-8) with a 78-75 victory over the Keydets on Saturday at McAlister Field House.
Â
When the Bulldogs needed a spark, their pair of graduate transfers
Derrick Henry and
P.J. Boutte delivered. The duo scored The Citadel's last six points to seal the win. Henry recorded a game-high 21 points and Boutte added eight points and four assists to go along with a career-high 11 rebounds.
Â
The Citadel needed a well-rounded effort offensively to down VMI. Seven different Bulldogs scored at least six points as
Quinton Marshall and
Quayson Williams joined Henry in double figures with 11 points and 12 points, respectively.
Â
Neither team managed to establish a commanding lead until VMI built a 61-52 advantage with 13:19 remaining in the game. That's when head coach
Duggar Baucom challenged his team to bear down. Henry and Boutte responded and rallied the troops to a gritty comeback win. Henry's ability to break the Keydets down with tough drives allowed him to get to the free throw line. The senior made 7-for-7 from the charity stripe on Saturday and has made 20-of-22 free throw attempts over the last three games.
Â
After another Henry jumper, he kicked out to an open Marshall on the ensuing possession for a big three-pointer that sliced the Bulldogs' deficit to 65-60. Baucom and company then turned to freshman
Matt Frierson for a lift offensively. Frierson immediately drained a trey off a set play to pull The Citadel within two. Boutte's layup two minutes later completed a 13-4 run by the Bulldogs and tied the score at 65-65. Frierson finished with seven crucial points off the bench.
Â
The two teams traded buckets throughout the next seven minutes of game clock until Henry once again took over in the final two minutes. He earned a trip to the foul line and buried two free throws to snap a 73-73 tie. Following a defensive stop, Henry drove to the rack again and banked in a layup in traffic to put the Bulldogs up by four. VMI scored to pull within two and force The Citadel to make a play with less than 20 seconds to play.
Â
Henry missed a contested trey, but Boutte raced in to secure his team-high 11th rebound and force the Keydets to foul. The 5-foot-9 speedster made 1-of-2 at the free throw line and VMI could not tie the game on the Keydets' final possession.
Â
Following the homestand, The Citadel travels to Chattanooga on Monday and Mercer on Feb. 6 before returning to McAlister on Feb. 8 to face Samford. For more information on The Citadel men's basketball, stay tuned to CitadelSports.com and followÂ
