CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel volleyball team fell in four sets 21-25, 25-19, 25-19 and 25-13 in a Southern Conference match against UNCG on Saturday night.
For the second straight night, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead, defeating the Spartans 25-21 in the first set. The Bulldogs hit a match-high .407 in the set, recording 15 kills to four errors. Outside hitter
Moriah Smith finished with six kills and a .444 hitting percentage to lead the team.
The Spartans responded with back-to-back 25-19 set victories in sets two and three to take a 2-1 lead in the match. The Bulldogs hit .213 in set two and dropped to .081 in set three.
In the fourth and final set, UNCG hit .410 to claim the set 25-13 and the match 3-1.
Smith led the team with 17 kills and tied defensive specialist
Gracie Barnes with 15 digs. Smith recorded her 13th double-double of the season.
Right-side hitter
Megan Sowell finished with eight kills and a .304 hitting percentage, while middle hitter
Sarah Dobrich added seven kills with a .385 hitting percentage.
Setter
Logan Smith led the team with 20 assists, followed by
Priscilla Irizarry with 19 assists. Libero
Samantha Espy finished with 13 digs and two assists. The Bulldogs hit .178 for the match, while UNCG hit .297 overall. Ashley Muench led the Spartans with 22 kills.
The Bulldogs will be on the road for their next three matches. They continue SoCon play at Samford on Friday before visiting Furman next Saturday.
