LEXINGTON, Va.
–The Citadel women's soccer team season came to an end on Wednesday in a heartbreaking loss to VMI after letting a goal slip through in the 91st minute.

"We put a lot into the game today and probably deserved to win in the 90 minutes," The Citadel head coach Ciaran Traquair said. "We created the best chances and dominated as the game wore on. I told the players to be proud of the commitment and bravery it took to come on the road and force the issue to try and win the game. We've learned a lot as a unit this year and I fully believe we are about to embark on a very successful period in the program's history. The standards and foundation are now in place for us to develop into a very good side. I want to thank the seniors for their efforts this season. I will always remember the hard work they have put in this year to get us going as a program again."

Neither team was able to get anything going in the first half and at the halftime break the score remained 0-0. Freshman Logan Leask was solid in the goal for the Bulldogs, finishing the first half with five saves.

The Bulldogs (5-13, 1-8 SoCon) opened up the second half with a flurry of shots with a great chance coming at the 46-minute mark on a shot by Mady Riegel. The junior's shot from inside the box hit the crossbar and just narrowly missed bouncing in for a goal. Riegel had another shot in the 68th minute that was online but VMI's (8-11, 4-5 SoCon) keeper deflected the ball just enough to keep the score at 0-0.

After neither team was able to find the back of the net in regulation, the match moved to overtime. In the 91st minute, the Keydets were able to move the ball deep into Bulldog territory and lofted a shot just over the head of Leask to claim the 1-0 win.

The Citadel finished with 14 shots in the match and were led by Emilie Valenciano with five to push her season total to 61. Riegel tallied four in the game while Katherine Arroyo and Caroline Cashion both recorded two.
