TIGERVILLE, S.C. – The 9th-ranked Citadel football team downed North Greenville 38-14 on Thursday night to improve to 5-0 for the first time since 1992.
With the win, head coach
Brent Thompson has broken The Citadel's record for most wins to start a career. His 5-0 start betters the previous mark of 4-0 established by Ralph Foster, who won all three games in 1906 and the first game of 1907.
North Greenville (3-3) scored first in the non-conference game with 8:43 left in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead. On its next drive, The Citadel (5-0) wasted little time and responded with a 17-yard touchdown by
Reggie Williams to tie the game at 7-7. The five-play, 59-yard drive took just 1:40 off the clock.Â
The score remained 7-7 heading into the second quarter but the Bulldogs scored just three plays into the quarter to take a 14-7 lead. On 2nd-and-8
Rod Johnson received the pitch and took it 49 yards to the house for The Citadel's second rushing touchdown of the game.
Three drives later, the Crusaders tied the game back up at 14-14 with a 90-yard pass in what would prove to be North Greenville's last score in the contest. But once again The Citadel responded on its next drive as
Cam Jackson broke free for a 52-yard run. The drive started at the Bulldogs' own 48-yard line after a personal foul penalty by NGU on the kickoff moved the ball up the field. Heading into the half, the score remained 21-14 in favor of the Bulldogs.
The Citadel opened the game up on its first drive of the second half thanks to
Dominique Allen's 15-yard scamper for a touchdown. The 11-play, 78-yard drive gave The Citadel a 28-14 lead with 6:48 left in the third quarter.
Six minutes later the Bulldogs found the end zone again, this time through the air as Allen connected with
Reggie Williams from 30 yards out to make it a 35-14 game with 10 seconds remaining in the third quarter. The Citadel's last score in the contest came via a 31-yard
Cody Clark field goal with 10:16 left in the fourth quarter to clinch the win for the Bulldogs.
For the second consecutive week the Bulldogs notched 500 rushing yards, marking the first time in school history The Citadel has tallied back-to-back 500 yard games. This week's rushing total of 559 yards is the second-highest single-game rushing output in program history, and the 599 yards of total offense ranks seventh on The Citadel's single-game list. Jackson led the Bulldogs with 107 yards rushing and three other Bulldogs finished with at least 80 yards on the ground.
Defensively, the Bulldogs were led by
Tevin Floyd's seven tackles and
Myles Pierce's career-high 3.0 tackles for loss.
Dee Delaney grabbed his third interception of the season and 10th of his career, breaking a tie for fifth on The Citadel's all-time list. The Citadel held North Greenville to 2-of-12 (.167) on third down and in the last two games has allowed its opponents to convert 2-of-20 (.100) third-down attempts.
