Bulldogs Take 4-Set Loss at Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Citadel volleyball team fell in four sets 25-6, 24-26, 25-21 and 26-24 in a Sunday afternoon match at Furman.

The Bulldogs (6-15, 0-6 SoCon) rallied after a 25-6 first set loss to take set two 26-24 and force Furman into a tough fought four-set match.

"This has been a weekend where we've definitely made some progress," said head coach Craig Mosqueda. "We have to learn to manage our errors and then we will start winning more sets."

After hitting -.207 in the opening set, the Bulldogs rebounded to hit .324 in set two. Outside hitter Carla Bruce and right side hitter Jen Barbot each recorded five kills in the set to lead the team. Barbot also hit .571 with just one error in the set.

The second set went back-and-forth from the first serve, with neither team holding more than a two point lead. With the match tied 24-24, the Bulldogs took the final two points on a Furman service error and a Bruce kill.

The Bulldogs carried the momentum into set three, grabbing an early 9-4 lead and forcing a Furman timeout. After the Paladins tied the score at 13 apiece, the Bulldogs responded with four straight points to take a 17-13 lead. Furman answered with a six point rally, eventually taking the set 25-21.

In the fourth set, the Bulldogs opened quickly once again, leading 8-2 after another Bruce kill. The Paladins would not stay down though, tying the match up 13-13. Furman then opened up a 20-16 lead and looked in control for the set, but the Bulldogs took six of the next eight points to tie the match up at 22 apiece after a Megan Sowell kill. After a Furman timeout, however, the Paladins responded with four of the final six points to take the set in extra points 26-24.

Bruce led the team with 16 kills, her second highest total in a match this season. The junior finished with a team-high 40 attacks, adding seven digs. Outside hitter Moriah Smith recorded nine kills and seven digs, while Sowell also posted nine kills for the Bulldogs. Setter Priscilla Irizarry tallied 22 assists, followed by Logan Smith with 18. Libero Samantha Espy led the team with 13 digs.

The Bulldogs will next take a break from SoCon play, visiting South Carolina State on Thursday at 7 p.m. They will then host their previous SoCon opponent, Furman, on Sunday at 2 p.m.
