GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Citadel basketball team lost 92-63 to UNCG on Thursday night at the Greensboro Coliseum. The Bulldogs fell down early and faced an 18-point halftime deficit that was too much to overcome.
Â
Junior
Brian White had nine points at halftime and finished with 18 points off the bench behind an 8-for-8 effort from the free throw line. Senior
Derrick Henry reached double figures for the 26th time this season with 13 points and junior
Warren Sledge posted nine points, three steals and three rebounds.
Â
During the loss, The Citadel broke its fourth program record as a team this season. With 882 total field goals and counting, the Bulldogs set a new all-time mark for field goals made in a single season. The Citadel has also set team records for points scored in a season, three-pointers in a season and steals in a season during the 2015-16 campaign.
Â
UNCG raced out to a double-digit advantage within the first seven minutes of the contest. Freshman Francis Alonso captained the early Spartan run and had 16 of his game-high 21 points at halftime. The Citadel could not get going from beyond the arc and stop UNCG's momentum as the Spartans took a 45-27 lead into the break.
Â
UNCG pushed in front 59-31, but the Bulldogs hit three consecutive treys and put together a 9-2 run to slice the deficit. The Citadel made 10 three-pointers on Thursday and the Bulldogs have now piled up double-digit trifectas in 20 games this season.
Â
The Spartans responded though and used a 13-2 spurt to distance themselves further. Most of UNCG's production came from its starting core with Marvin Smith adding 18 points and 16 rebounds and Diante Baldwin scoring 15 points. The Citadel held a 49-24 edge in bench points, but it was not enough to match UNCG's hot-shooting.
Â
The Citadel wraps up the regular season at VMI on Saturday. Tip off is slated for 1 p.m. on ESPN3 and Sports Radio 1450 AM.
