Track & Field Heads to SoCon Indoor Championships

FULL SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The 2016 Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships are slated for Friday and Saturday at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama as Samford plays host. This is the 81st championship for the men and 29th for the women.
The Citadel men's and women's track and field teams are sending 29 cadet-athletes to Birmingham this season with 17 men and 12 women traveling to the conference championships. Friday's action begins at 10 a.m. with the women's pentathlon and concludes at 7:30 p.m. Events resume on Saturday at 9:15 a.m. and wrap up Saturday evening with an awards ceremony at 4:05 p.m.
Heading in to the championships, The Citadel men's squad ranks fifth in the league in the power rankings and the women's team ranks sixth. The rankings are determined by the top eight times or scores that are reported by the schools for each event that will be conducted at this weekend's championships.
Caillian Colquitt, Jessica DeWitte, Bethany Reeves, Ty'Rhonza Harris and Sarah Johnson are each set for a busy two days as they steer the women's squad. Colquitt, DeWitte and Reeves will all compete in the DMR, 1-mile and 5000-meter events. Reeves is coming off a personal-best in the 1-mile with a 5:55.02 at last week's Gamecock Invite.
Harris and Johnson are both running in the 200-meter and 400-meter sprints as well as pacing the 4x400 relay. They will join Summer Thompson and Hannah Murray as the quartet looks to build on a season-best 4:16.31 at the High Point Challenge two weeks ago.
Tevin Williams, Devin Singleton, Malik Diggs and Josiah Johnson captain a strong group of men's sprinters traveling to the SoCon Championships. Diggs and Johnson are riding momentum after solid days at the Gamecock Invite last Saturday.
Diggs secured a 7.86 time in the 55HH to grab the seventh-best time in program history. He'll take on a talented field in the 60HH this weekend. Johnson qualified for the finals in the 55-meter sprint last week and earned a personal record time of 6.52. He will run in the 60-meter dash, 200-meter dash and 4x400 relay over the next two days.
Sophomore Derrick Freeland highlights a crop of four men's throwers heading to Birmingham. Freeland has had a breakout campaign, improving his personal records multiple times during the indoor season. He'll compete in the shot put on Friday evening and the weight throw on Saturday morning.
