Bulldogs Edged by No. 19 Tigers in 5-4 Thriller

Box Score (PDF)

CHARLESTON, S.C.
– The Citadel baseball team dropped the last contest of a two-game series with No. 19 Clemson 5-4 in thrilling fashion Wednesday night inside Joe Riley Park.

After already plating one in the ninth inning and with the tying run on third with one out, The Citadel had a chance to tie the ballgame but two consecutive strikeouts gave Clemson (13-3) the 5-4 win over the 'Dogs.

The Joe was packed once again and for third time this season, a crowd of more than 4,500 fans watched The Citadel take on a top-20 opponent.

The Bulldogs' (7-10) pitching staff picked up right where they left off from Tuesday's game, fanning 10 batters for a combined 23 strikeouts in the series. Freshman Dylan Spence pitched a gem of a game in relief, striking out a career-best seven of the 14 batters he faced. Spence, making just his fourth appearance this season, kept the Tigers' high-powered offense in check and allowed just one run to cross the plate in a career-high three innings of work. Head coach Fred Jordan used six pitchers in the contest.

Steven Hansen recorded one of the two extra base hits for the Bulldogs, lacing a leadoff triple down the right field line in the seventh inning but was stranded on third. The triple was just the second of Hansen's career. Despite tying the game three different times, The Citadel was unable to take the lead and stranded a base runner on third base in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.

The Citadel tallied six hits in the contest with Jason Smith, Bret Hines and William Kinney accounting for the three RBI.

Stephen Windham continued to mow runners down on the base paths, throwing out two runners attempting to steal second to push his season total to nine.

The Citadel gets a short break before returning to the field to host Presbyterian for a three-game series. First pitch for Friday's game is slated to begin at 5 p.m. with the Saturday and Sunday games beginning at 1 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at CitadelSports.com.
