CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel tennis team fell 6-1 to Navy at the Earle Tennis Center on Wednesday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (8-18) took an early lead by winning the doubles point and then were able to win the first set in three of the singles matches. However, Navy (12-7) fought back to claim each of the six singles points and take the team victory.
Navy won the first doubles match completed courtesy of a 6-3 final at No. 3, and then The Citadel duo of
Nicholas Bradley and
Michael Anzalone picked up a 6-3 win at No. 2 to even the team battle for the opening point. The deciding match was played at No. 1, where
Matthew Henson and
Artemie Amari earned a 6-4 victory and gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the team score.
The Citadel moved into singles play where Amari won the first set at No. 2, Henson won his opening set at No. 3 and Anzalone won the first set at No. 5.
Roy Hobson dropped his first set before rebounding to claim the second set and push his match to a deciding third set. Navy earned straight-set victories at No. 1 and No. 4.
Wednesday's match was the sixth in seven days for the Bulldogs, who have the rest of the week off and return to action Monday when they host DePaul at 2 p.m.
