CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel rifle team hosts its first home match of the 2016-17 season Saturday when TCU comes to town.
"The lessons we learned last week will be put to the test against TCU," head coach William Smith said. "The match against VMI showed us our strong points and pointed out the areas we need to focus on in practice. TCU is one of the top teams in the nation and is consistently near the top of the rankings, so it will be a good measure for us."
Last week at VMI, The Bulldogs' co-ed team finished second with 4,459 points, missing out on the win by only 20 points. The Citadel women's team took fourth in the competition utilizing a lineup of three sophomores and two newcomers.
"Coach Smith and I are very pleased with the performance of both teams at VMI," assistant coach Sandra Worman said. "They did everything we asked of them and successfully applied the skills we had been developing in practice. Being resilient in the face of adversity, or unexpected obstacles, and the mental challenge of carrying on after a wayward shot were the areas we had been working hard to strengthen. Both teams showed great resolve and success in these areas."
Junior Morgan Long leads The Citadel back into competition after winning air rifle with 577 points and, combined with his second-place, 556-point performance in smallbore, claiming the top overall aggregate score of 1,113. Sophomore Allison Auten added another top-five finish for the Bulldogs by taking fifth in smallbore and placed 12th in air rifle. Freshman Alexander McAlear made his collegiate debut and registered top-12 finishes in both competitions with a sixth-place showing in air rifle and 12th place in smallbore.
Senior Richie Parra and junior Colton Poole logged top-10 finishes in air rifle and Poole also placed seventh in smallbore. Sophomores Leah Wallace and Brandi Duzz both scored 547 points in air rifle. Freshman Faith Totherow and junior Carli Cline are expected to compete in their first home match this week after making their Bulldog debuts last week.
The match will begin at 8:45 a.m. and consist of two relays on each discipline. Admission to the match at the Inouye Marksmanship Center is free, and live stats will be available on CitadelSports.com.
