CHARLESTON, S.C. – With a 2-0 shutout win over LIU Brooklyn on Sunday, The Citadel women's soccer team improved to 3-0 for the first time in program history.
Â
"That was a very difficult challenge to what we have faced so far," head coach
Ciaran Traquair said. "LIU was very direct and we took some time to adjust and had to ride out some spells of pressure. We did very well to get ahead and probably should have added more before eventually getting the second goal. I'm delighted for Mady to get on the score sheet again and I'm happy to see others get in on the act. This has been a fantastic start to the season and I am proud of the work these girls are putting in everyday"
Â
Mady Riegel gave the Bulldogs (3-0) a 1-0 lead early in the first half, collecting the ball in the box and finding the left side of the goal after her first shot was deflected by the keeper. The junior's second goal of the season and 10th of her career came in the 18th minute.
Â
The score remained 1-0 heading into halftime and it was all Bulldogs after 45 minutes of play, registering 12 shots compared to LIU Brooklyn's (0-5) four. The Citadel finished the contest with 26 shots, the most in any game this season.
Â
Both teams struggled in the second half to get anything going until senior captain
Ilana Green scored the first goal of her career in the 79th minute to seal the victory. Green received the pass from
Emilie Valenciano and took the shot from just outside the box, finding the back of the net over the outstretched arms of the keeper to make it a 2-0 game.
Â
Freshman keeper
Logan Leask posted her third consecutive shutout this season with eight saves including two key deflections down the stretch to preserve the Bulldogs' lead. The shutout marked the first time in program history that The Citadel has had three shutouts in its first three games. Three shutouts is also tied for the second-most in any season.
Â
Valenciano led the team with eight shots and five shots on goal.
Katherine Arroyo,
Montana Hinson and Riegel all finished with four shots in the victory.
