CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel wrestling team (1-7, 0-2 SoCon) will head to Lexington, Virginia, to face SoCon rival Virginia Military Institute (1-9, 0-3) on Friday.
Last Saturday, the Bulldogs fell to Gardner-Webb's Runnin' Bulldogs in a close 31-13 match. The Bulldogs battled back and cut the lead down to 12-9 with three decisions from 141-lb. freshman Douglas Gudenburr, 149-lb. junior Ty Buckiso and 157-lb. graduate student Aaron Walker.
The Runnin' Bulldogs pulled ahead with two major decisions, a pin and a technical fall, but not before The Citadel's sophomore Sawyer Root earned a major decision in the 197-lb. weight class to give the Bulldogs a total of 13 points.
Friday will mark the 38th meeting between the Bulldogs and VMI since 1956, and The Citadel holds a 19-18 edge in the series.
