Soccer Set to Close Out Regular Season on the Road

The Citadel Week-10 Notes
SoCon Week-10 Notes

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel women's soccer team will close out the regular season on the road this weekend with games at VMI and UNCG. The Bulldogs will first travel to Lexington, Va., on Friday, Oct. 20, for a 3 p.m. kickoff against the Keydets before heading to Greensboro, N.C., for a 2 p.m. first kick on Sunday, Oct. 22.

"We put so much into both games this past weekend, but we were unfortunate not to get anything from the Chattanooga game after coming back from being down 2-0," said head coach Ciaran Traquair. "The response on Sunday against Samford was exceptional. Not many teams score on Samford or run them close. We did both. I am encouraged by the desire the group is showing at this stage of the season. I believe we are getting everything from our players at this point and hopefully we can get the rewards from it."

The Citadel and VMI have squared off on the soccer pitch eight times, four as SoCon rivals. the Keydets hold a narrow 5-3 advantage in the all-time series, but are 3-0 over the Bulldogs in SoCon league games. The Citadel won the first two meetings before VMI claimed the next three. The series in Lexington, Va., has been fairly even with both sides taking two of the four contests.

VMI enters the weekend with a 5-10-1 overall record, including a 2-4 mark at home. The Keydets are 2-4-1 and are currently ninth in the conference standings with seven points after dropping three of their last five matches, including two straight on the road. The Keydets have been led in scoring by Julianne Knoblett's three goals and one assist for seven points. Emma Quirk also has three goals for six points. The only other player to have scored multiple goals for VMI is Taylor Callahan with two. Six players have scored one goal on the year. In goal, Ceci Keppeler has played in all 16 matches, recording 112 saves compared to 24 goals against. She has three shutouts to her credit.

UNCG holds a 16-0 record over The Citadel dating back to the 2001 season, including an 8-0 record in Greensboro.

UNCG enters the final weekend of the regular season third in the SoCon standings with a 3-2-2 conference record and 11 points. The Spartans are 6-7-3 overall on the year and 3-3-1 at home. They have earned positive results in four of their last five games, going 2-1-2 over that span, including going 2-0-1 in their last three home matches. Entering the weekend, Emily Jensen and Regan Lehman lead the offensive charge with three goals each, including three game-winners between the two. Jensen has taken 15 shots on the season while Lehman has taken 21. Quiqui Hita and Heida Vidarsdottir have both scored two goals with Hita leading the team with 30 shots. In goal, Aiyanah Cooper has played in every game, making 71 saves compared to giving up 17 goals. She is 6-6-3 on the year with five shutouts to her credit.

Following the regular season finale, it will be a quick turnaround for the Bulldogs, who will turn their attention to the SoCon Tournament. The Citadel will play a first-round game at a higher seed on Wednesday, Oct. 25, with the opponent and location still to be determined.
