Cierra Skyers pulled The Citadel women's soccer team even, 1-1 to Western Carolina in the 79
th minute of Sunday afternoon's game, but the Catamounts would not be denied as Sayres McKenna found the back of the net in the 89
th minute to claim a 2-1 Southern Conference (SoCon) win at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
The game, which was moved up two hours due to heavy rain in the area, progressed scoreless through the first 50 minutes before Megan McCallister scored just 5:08 into the second half to give the Catamounts (5-8-2, 2-3-1 SoCon) the first lead of the afternoon.
It took another 28 minutes before the Bulldogs (5-8, 0-5 SoCon) could find an equalizer. Skyers shot the ball from the left of the box, just outside of the post, scoring her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
With the match appeared headed for overtime, McKenna gave the Catamounts the lead back for good with just under two minutes to go. It was the 19
th shot by WCU on the afternoon.
The Catamounts out-shot The Citadel 19-8 in the game, and 10-4 in shots on goal. WCU also held a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Logan Leask (L, 1-6) came in for the final 30 minutes of the match and made five saves between the pipes while being saddled with the loss. Jacquelyn Gnassi (W, 3-4) made three saves in goal in her 90 minutes for the Catamounts.
The Citadel returns home next weekend for the final two games at Washington Light Infantry (WLI) Field of the season. The Bulldogs will first host Chattanooga on Friday, Oct. 13, at 3 p.m. before turning their attention to Samford on Sunday, Oct. 15, at 2 p.m.
