CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel wrestling team dropped its match to non-conference opponent George Mason to in McAlister Field House on Friday, Nov. 3.
The Bulldogs (0-1) had a slow start to the night by dropping the 125-pound, 133-pound and 141-pound bouts to the Patriots. The Bulldogs regained momentum when senior
Ty Buckiso won the 149 lb. dual by a 5-2 decision over GMU's Matt Raines to put the Bulldogs on the board.
Sophomore
Rian Burris for the 165 lb. weight class and freshman
Matthew McGillick at 174 pounds won back-to-back matches to give the Bulldogs 10 total points. Burris earned a 15-6 major decision over Brendan May, before McGillick snatched a 12-7 decision over Levko Higgins.
The 197 lb. junior,
Sawyer Root, earned the remaining three points for the Bulldogs with an 11-6 decision over Eli Spencer. The Patriots answered by winning the heavyweight dual and taking the match 24-13.
Next up, the Bulldogs will travel to Roanoke, Virginia, to compete in their first tournament of the season at Virginia Tech on Sunday, Nov. 5. The Hokie Open is set to begin at 10:00 a.m. in the Bergland Center, and full results will be available at CitadelSports.com.
