CHARLESTON, S.C. – Three freshmen, led by
Alex Reed's career-high 18 points and
Derek Webster, Jr.'s first career double-double, scored in double figures Saturday afternoon, leading The Citadel men's basketball team to a 110-66 win over Point at McAlister Field House.
All six freshmen scored in the game and combined for 69 of the Bulldogs' 110 points. The Bulldogs' starting five was made up of all underclassmen, including Reed and
Rob Johnson each earning the first starts of their collegiate careers. They were joined by fellow freshman
Tariq Simmons and sophomores
Kaelon Harris and
Frankie Johnson.
"I'm very proud of Alex and Rob each getting their first starts, and Alex made the most of it with 18 points while going 4-of-8 from three-point range. I thought he played very well and so did Derek off the bench with his double-double. That's certainly the best he's played," said head coach
Duggar Baucom. "Everybody who took the floor today played hard and gave their all. You sometimes worry about the players' energy level with a game like this, just coming out of exams, Thursday's night's game at Campbell and looking ahead to Ohio State, but I thought our pressure was good and we turned a lot of turnovers into points."
The Bulldogs (5-6) led from opening tip to the final horn, including stretching the lead out to as many as 46 point to secure the win. The Citadel forced Point (4-12) into 31 turnovers, the second-most turnovers forced by the Bulldogs this season, and turned those 31 Skyhawk miscues into 49 points. In comparison, the Bulldogs turned the ball over 17 times.
The Citadel also received 54 points from the bench, more than the Skyhawks' starting five managed combined (42).
The Bulldogs shot 48.7% (38-of-78) from the field and had 22 assists on those 38 made shots (57.9% of shots had an assist) after opening the game shooting 57.1% (20-of-35) from the field in the first half. The Bulldogs shot 81.5% (22-of-27) from the free throw line.
Reed led the team with 18 points off 6-of-11 .545) shooting from the field. He set career highs in points scored, field goals made, field goals attempted, free throws made and attempted (2), steals (3) and minutes played (22).
Four other Bulldogs scored in double figures, including Simmons with 16 points,
Quayson Williams with 13, Webster with 10 and Harris with 10. Webster's double-double, including 11 rebounds, was the first for The Citadel this season.
Leandro Allende just missed out on a double-double of his own as he finished with eight points and eight rebounds. Harris led the team with six assists while
Matt Frierson led the team with five steals in 23 minutes of work.
On the other side of the court, Point managed to shoot 43.3% (29-of-67) from the field, but hit on just 18.2% (4-of-22) of their attempts from three-point range. The Skyhawks also only converted 36.4% (4-of-11) of their shots from the free throw line.
Tyonn Stuckey led all scorers with 21 points off 10-of-16 (.625) shooting from the field. Behind him,
B.J. Brown scored 10 points while
Hakeem Winters and
Chuka Okeke each netted eight points.
