CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel wrestling team will face SoCon competitor Campbell on Sunday in McAlister Field House.
Last Friday, the Bulldogs (2-7, 1-2 SoCon) defeated VMI to win their first conference match of the season. The Keydets had a hot start with a decision and a major decision in the 125-pound and 133-pound weight classes, giving them a 7-0 lead. The Bulldogs then took a 12-7 lead with two decisions from 141-pound freshman Douglas Gudenburr and 157-pound graduate student Aaron Walker plus a pin in 3 minutes, 27 seconds from 149-lb. junior Ty Buckiso. The Bulldogs finished with a 19-16 victory.
The Citadel wrestling team also competed in the All-Academy Championships on Sunday, January 29. Buckiso was the lone member of the Bulldog squad to take first place in his weight class, with 197-lb. sophomore Sawyer Root and 133-lb. junior Andrew Szalwinski finishing third in their respective weight classes. The Bulldogs took fifth place overall in the tournament with 33 total points.
Campbell (6-6, 2-1) is on a three-match winning streak after a 42-3 home victory against Davidson on Thursday. The Citadel holds a 23-10 all-time record against the Camels since the first meeting in 1972.
