Bulldogs Slip at C of C Despite Sears' 15 Ks

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel baseball team fell 3-2 in the opening game of its three-game series against the College of Charleston on Friday night at Patriot's Point.
Starting pitcher JP Sears was dealing all night, striking out 15 batters over seven innings. The junior allowed just four hits and two walks over the 108 pitch outing, receiving a no-decision. The reigning SoCon Pitcher of the Week was consistently dominant, striking out two batters in all seven innings, including all three batters in the fourth.
Sears' 15 strikeouts are the second highest of his career after striking out 19 last season against VMI on March 25. It is also his second straight double-digit strikeout performance and sixth of his career after whiffing 12 batters a week ago against Delaware State.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the second inning after Joe Sabatini rocketed a one-out triple to right field. Bryce Leasure drove him home a batter later with an RBI groundout, reaching on an error by the shortstop.
After Sears struck out the final batter he faced in the seventh, the Bulldogs played a little small ball with a single, hit-and-run play and a sacrifice squeeze to score Clay Martin and give the bullpen extra cushion.
In the bottom half of the eighth, however, the College of Charleston's Logan McRae crushed a three-run home run to left center field to drive in the eventual winning runs.
It was an expected pitcher's duel as Sears faced the Cougars' Bailey Ober, and neither pitcher disappointed. Ober picked up his third win of the season, throwing eight innings with 12 strikeouts while allowing two runs.
