
Bulldogs Finish Third at SoCon Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Citadel men's track and field team took third place overall at the 2017 Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships that concluded Friday.

This year's championship marks the first time the men's squad finished third or higher since 2009. The Bulldogs earned 132 total points, the most in school history. The previous high was 94 total points at the 1986 championships.

Senior Malik Diggs became a two-time SoCon champion on Friday in the 110-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles. The Laurinburg, North Carolina, native is the first SoCon athlete to win both hurdle events in the same year since Appalachian State's Stanley Broaden in 2013 and is the fourth since 1996. In the 110 hurdles, Diggs improved his personal-best time to 14.27 seconds, the second-fastest time in The Citadel's history. He also won the 400 hurdles with a time of 52.87 and is ranked second on the program's all-time list.

The men's 4x100-meter relay with Diggs, junior Devin Singleton, junior Dee Delaney and sophomore Josiah Johnson finished second overall with a time of 41.48. The 4x400 relay team of Diggs, Singleton, sophomore Clarence Richardson and freshman Samuel Santiago also took second place with a time of 3:17.19.

Johnson finished fourth overall in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.70 after qualifying on Thursday in 10.58, the fifth-fastest time in program history. Johnson also took fourth place in the 200 meters with a time of 21.74 after moving to No. 5 on The Citadel's all-time list in the prelims with a time of 21.58.

Singleton secured fourth place in the 400 meters with a personal-best time of 48.97, the seventh-fastest time in program history. Singleton also had an eighth-place finish in the 200 with a time of 22.29.

The women's team finished eighth overall with 24 points led by junior Mady Riegel who earned her second straight SoCon championship in the javelin on Thursday with a heave of 136 feet, 9 inches.
