CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel women's soccer team saw its unbeaten streak come to an end Friday afternoon at the hands of cross-town rival Charleston Southern. The Buccaneers claimed the match 2-1 at Washington Light Infantry (WLI) Field despite a late charge from the Bulldogs.
"I don't think we started off as poorly as we have (in previous games)," said Head Coach
Ciaran Traquair. "We allowed them to get a goal ahead and that's going to happen in soccer, but I've told our players they have to realize that we have to get ahead. If we're not going to get ahead, then we're going to have to be good enough defensively to make sure we don't allow teams to get too far ahead of us or we'll have to change our game plan and chase the game.
"Even though we had to chase the game and change our game plan, I thought we did well to get back in it to give ourselves an opportunity to try and get an equalizer in the last five minutes," Traquair continued. "Ultimately, we probably exerted too much energy trying to get to that situation and we just didn't have enough to close the game out."
Charleston Southern (2-3) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first half when Lydia Frierson collected a rebounded ball off the cross bar and put the ball into the net in the 23
rd minute.
Kylie Doster stretched the lead out to 2-0 in the 68
th minute when she collected a shot that ricocheted off a Bulldog defender and scored.
Despite being down, The Citadel (3-1) rebounded nicely in the closing minutes by turning up the heat on the visiting Bucs. In the 81
st minute, it paid off as
Cierra Skyers sent a cross into the box despite being heavily guarded. Her cross found knob
Logan Dix waiting just to the right of the keeper. Despite having a defender of her own to worry about, Dix finished the play to record her second collegiate goal.
Over the closing nine minutes, The Citadel continued to apply heavy pressure while looking for the equalizer. Despite not finding it, the Bulldogs maintained possession of the ball for much of the closing minutes and had several good moves to advance the ball up field.
Maria Contreras led the Bulldog attack with three shots, including one on goal. Fellow knobs
Ellie Burgess and
Kate Manzione as well as Skyers all ended the game with two shots as the Bulldogs were out-shot 15-13 by the Bucs.
Knob
Kaeley Johnston (3-1) started in goal, earning her fourth collegiate start while making three saves while suffering her first loss. Sophomore
Logan Leask came on to mind the net for the second half.
Alyssa Dellacqua (2-3) earned her second win of the season, recording three saves in her 90 minutes of work for Charleston Southern.
The Citadel returns to action at WLI Field on Sunday, Sept. 3, with a 1 p.m. game against Presbyterian College.
