McAleavey Takes First, Bulldogs Finish Fourth at All-Academy Championships

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel wrestling team earned an impressive fourth-place finish at the 24th-Annual All-Academy Championships sponsored by USAA on Saturday, with sophomore Michael McAleavey leading the way to take first place in the 285-pound weight class.
The native from Venetia, Penn., started the day with a 3-2 decision over Army's Robert Heald before defeating Matt Wagner from Air Force in the semifinals by a 3-1 sudden victory. McAleavey finished the day with a quick pin in 1 minute, 36 seconds in the finals over Merchant Marine's Victor Raigozza.
Senior Ty Buckiso earned second place in the 149-pound weight class. He captured a 15-0 technical fall in 5:56 over VMI's Dolan Walsh in the quarterfinals before securing his first pin of the season in 2:55 over Will Lucie from Army in the semifinal round. Navy's Cory Wilding earned a last-second take down in the finals to oust Buckiso with a 4-3 decision.
Junior Sawyer Root and sophomore Douglas Gudenburr both dominated the consolation brackets at 197-lbs. and 141-lbs., respectively, to finish third overall.
Navy swept the day with 118 total team points and six first-place wins. The Mids also took home awards for the most outstanding wrestler and the wrestler with the most falls. Army took second place overall with 96.5 points and Air Force finished third with 87.
Up next, the Bulldogs will travel to Buies Creek, N.C., to continue conference play against Campbell on Saturday, Feb. 3. A live video stream and full results will be available at CitadelSports.com.
