NEW YORK, N.Y. – Former Citadel football All-American Andre Roberts was named to the NFL Pro Bowl as a return specialist, it was announced on Tuesday. The selections are made by a vote of the league's head coaches and players, as well as the fans.
Through 14 games, Roberts leads the NFL in both kick return yards (912) and punt return average (14.9). He becomes the first Jets returner to be selected for the Pro Bowl since Leon Washington in 2008.
After signing a deal with the Jets, Roberts made an immediate impact as he returned a punt 78 yards for a touchdown in Week 1. It was the team's first punt return touchdown since 2012 and the fifth-longest punt return in team history. In Week 7 against the Vikings, Roberts' 193 kickoff return yards was the most by any player in the league this season.
Roberts leads the league with 1,224 total return yards, including eight returns over 40 yards. Of those eight returns, seven have led to Jets' scores. No other player in the league has more than three returns of over 40 yards.
Roberts is in his ninth season in the NFL after being drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft. The two-time All-American, and three-time All-Southern Conference selection, holds The Citadel records for receptions in a game (14), season (95) and career (286): receiving yards in a season (1,334) and career (3,743); receiving touchdowns in a game (4), season (14) and career (37).
As a returner, Roberts is the school's all-time leader in punt return yards in a season (461) and career (1,160). He is also the all-time leader in all-purpose yards with 5,203.
The Pro Bowl will be played on Jan. 27, 2019 at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida.
