CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel honored seniors
Ty Buckiso and
Chandler Sambets on Senior Day on Sunday to end the 2018 regular season against Appalachian State in McAlister Field House.
Neither Buckiso or Sambets wrestled for the banged up Bulldogs, who lost the match 45-6 to the SoCon Champion Mountaineers. The Bulldogs lone win came from
Douglas Gudenburr at 141, coming away with the fall against
Irvin Enriquez at 3:31 to post six points for the Bulldogs.
The Citadel hung tough in the heavier weight classes, losing a tough decision at 197 as
Sawyer Root fell in a 3-2 decision.
Not wrestling Sunday was a tough point in the career of Buckiso and Sambets, two Bulldogs who have seen success on the mat and even more off.
Buckiso has been one of the Bulldogs' premiere wrestlers over the last four years, with 86 wins and wins in 80 percent of his SoCon matches. A team captain, Buckiso is also a Cadet Captain in the South Carolina Corps of Cadets and the captain of the wrestling team.
???????Sambets wrestled 27 times at 184 as a junior and starting every dual for The Citadel last year. He will graduate in May with a 3.7 GPA in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in Chinese. Sambets will finish in the top 10% in Nation as a Distinguished Military Graduate amd will Commission Active Duty in May as a Second Lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers.
The Bulldogs host the 2018 SoCon Championships in McAlister Field House on Saturday, March 3.
