CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel baseball team dropped the second game of a four-game series with UConn Saturday afternoon by a score of 17-3 at Joe Riley Park.
The series is now tied 1-1 after the Bulldogs took game-one on Friday, 4-2.
UConn (6-5) registered 19 hits on the afternoon and scored five runs in the top of the second, seven in the sixth and three in the eighth to go along with single runs in the fifth and ninth.
The Bulldogs (6-8) scored one run in the fifth, another in the seventh and one final run off a balk in the bottom of the ninth.
Taylor Cothran and
Ryan McCarthy each had a sacrifice fly to score the first two runs for The Citadel. Cothran's came in the fifth to score
Jonathan Sabo and McCarthy's scored
Bryce Leasure in the seventh.
Four Bulldogs finished the game with two hits each, including Sabo, Leasure, McCarthy and
Andrew Judkins. The Citadel finished with 11 hits as a team.
Seven Huskies recorded multiple hits on the day, led by
John Toppa and
Thad Phillips each with three. Toppa went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and another two batted in while Phillips went 3-for-5 with a run scored and one RBI.
Mason Feole (W, 2-0) pitched the first 5.2 innings for UConn to earn his second win on the year with five strikeouts while
Jordan Merritt (L, 1-1) was saddled with the loss in 5.1 innings of work despite striking out six batters.
UP NEXT
The Bulldogs and the Huskies will continue the series on Sunday, March 11. First pitch will be at1 p.m. and the series finale will feature a 3 p.m. first pitch on Monday.
