Baseball Falls 6-5 in Finale to Wofford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Senior William Kinney hit a grand to tie the game at 5-5 in the top of the fifth inning Saturday afternoon, but Wofford found the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth to take the game and sweep the Southern Conference series over The Citadel baseball team at King Field.

The Bulldogs (14-25, 3-9 SoCon) notched seven hits, including three extra-base knocks, while the Terriers (28-13, 9-3 SoCon) logged eight hits.

Clay Martin led the way at the dish with a 3-for-4 outing that included one run scored and a double while Kinney added his four RBIs and one runs scored off his homer. Bryce Leasure added the final extra-base hit for the 'Dogs.

Wofford was paced by Alex Malsch's 3-for-3 outing that saw him cross the plate twice while McClain Bradley went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in and one run scored.

As they did yesterday, the Bulldogs hit pay dirt first with a single run, this one in the top of the third when Leasure doubled to right-center field, scoring Martin from third.

The bottom of the inning saw Wofford jump out to a 3-1 lead as the Terriers plated three before adding another two in the bottom of the fourth.

The top of the fourth saw Brooks O'Brien, Jeffery Brown and Leasure reach safely, including back-to-back walks by Brown and Leasure, forcing a Wofford pitching change. The change in opposition did not affect Kinney as he blasted a 1-1 pitch well over the fence in left field to clear the bases and set the score at 5-all.

Wofford was able to manufacture the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth off a double steal attempt with two outs.

Jonathan Sabo made his third start of the season and pitched the first four innings, striking out two batters before giving way to Jordan Buster (L, 3-3) to close out the game. Buster took the loss for the Bulldogs, but gave up just two hits and one earned run while striking out two.

Jake Hershman was the pitcher of record for Wofford as he logged the final 4.2 innings, striking out seven while giving up one run and three hits.
