Bulldogs Suffer First Loss of Season, 4-2 at Presbyterian

CLINTON, S.C. – Despite pulling to within one goal, 3-2 of Presbyterian College late in the going, The Citadel women's soccer team was unable to push over the hump, falling for the first time this season, 4-2 at the hands of the Blue Hose on Sunday evening.

Key Plays
  • 4:04 – Morgan Hutchison got the scoring started with a strike from just outside the box that came after a PC corner was cleared out. It was the first goal of the 2018 season for PC.
  • 8:05 – Kelsey Yeager put a free kick from 28 yards out into the next to put the Blue Hose up 2-0.
  • 21:17 – Yeager notched her second goal of the game off a corner kick by Preston Robinette.
  • 37:32 – Katherine Arroyo sent a shot into the net from the edge of the box after Emily Mason had a one-touch from Kooba Richard near midfield.
  • 52:07 – Hannah Roth found Richard, who took one touch then sent a shot into the box that hit the crossbar and bounced in to score, pulling the Bulldogs to within one.
  • 76:11 – Mallory Hopkins beat the defense, then the keeper and slipped the ball in before going to the ground, extending the lead to 4-2 PC.

How it Happened
  • Presbyterian jumped out to a 3-0 lead through the first 22 minutes of action.
  • Late in the first half, Arroyo broke up PC's shutout with a shot from just on the edge of the penalty box.
  • The Bulldogs wasted little time in the second half as Richard pulled The Citadel to within a manageable one goal, 3-2 in the 53rd minute.
  • PC got an insurance goal in the 77th minute and held on from there despite a flurry of action from the Bulldogs.
  • The Bulldogs out-shot PC 19-11 with both teams registering eight shots on goal.

Notables
  • Richard, Maria Contreras, Mel Mikoy, Dakota Steiner and Kelly Brahmbhatt all played every minute.
  • With her goal in the first half, Katherine Arroyo moved up a spot in The Citadel record book, moving into a tie for 14th with Jessa Scott (2007-08) with eight career goals.
  • Kooba Richard's goal in the second half was the first of the season for the midfield graduate transfer from Belmont Abbey. She now has nine career collegiate goals, including eight for the Crusaders.

The Bulldogs will next travel to Orangeburg, South Carolina, for a midweek game at South Carolina State. The matchup with the Bulldogs in red and blue will kick off at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 29.
