CHARLESTON, S.C. – Southern Conference play opens up this week with The Citadel women's soccer team on the road at Samford (Friday, Sept. 21) and Chattanooga (Sunday, Sept. 23). It marks the second straight year the Bulldogs have opened SoCon play on the road as the 2017 Bulldogs began last year's conference campaign at Mercer.
THE CITADEL IN THE NATION
Heading into this weekend's pair of road games, The Citadel women's soccer team is ranked in the top-25 in the nation in six statistical categories. The Bulldogs are tied for 14th with an average of 7.88 points per game and are 15th with a scoring average of 2.75 goals per contest. The Citadel is also tied for 17th in the nation with 22 goals scored and the Bulldogs are tied for 21st with 63 points on the year. The 'Dogs are tied for 23rd with 19 assists and are 24th with 2.38 assists per game.
UNDEFEATED AT HOME IN NON-CONFERENCE ACTION
For the first time in program history, The Citadel women's soccer team went undefeated at home during the home non-conference portion of the campaign. The Bulldogs went 4-0 at home against the likes of North Florida, Francis Marion, Bob Jones and Hampton, out-scoring the opposition 11-4. The 2013 team went 2-0-2 at home against non-conference foes through the months of August and September, but dropped a 4-3, overtime decision at home against Francis Marion on Oct. 30.
SCORING IN BUNCHES
The Bulldogs are currently riding a streak of eight games where they have scored multiple goals, setting a new program record for longest streak of games with multiple goals scored and for longest streak of games with at least one goal scored. The previous longest streak of games with multiple goals scored was five set during the 2010 campaign from Sept. 15 - Oct. 1. The Citadel had a stretch of six consecutive games spanning the end of the 2011 season and the first two games of the 2012 season where the Bulldogs scored at least one goal.
SCORING GOALS IN THE FIRST EIGHT GAMES
Through the first eight games, The Citadel has scored 22 goals. The 22 goals are the most scored by a Bulldog team through the first eight contests since the 2009 squad tallied 23 goals, including a program-record 14 in the season opener against Alabama A&M.
WHAT SOPHOMORE SLUMP?
Logan Dix has enjoyed a highly successful first part of her sophomore campaign, leading the team with six goals scored and 15 points. Dix is ranked in the top 35 in NCAA Division I in five different statistical categories, including tied for 25th in both total goals scored (6) and points per game (1.88). Dix is also tied for 26th in the nation with 15 points, tied for 31st with a scoring average of 0.75 goals per contest and 34th in Division I with a shot accuracy of .680. Fellow sophomore
Hannah Roth is tied for 50th in the nation with four assists so far on the year.
BULLDOGS MOVING UP CAREER LISTS
Dix,
Katherine Arroyo and Roth have all made moves up various career lists already this season. Dix most recently moved up into a tie for 12th all-time with nine career goals as she has six so far this season and also moved up into a tie for 12th for career points with 23, including 15 so far this year. Her six goals scored on the year rank just outside the top 10 in program history for goals scored in a single season while her 15 points this season has her currently tied for 15th in program history for points in a single season. Arroyo is currently tied for 15th in program history with eight career goals and is 17th in career points with 19. She is also tied for 10th with two game-winning goals. Roth moved up into a tie for 11th all-time with five assists for her career. He four assists so far this season are tied for sixth-most by a Bulldog in a single season.
THE HISTORY WITH SAMFORD
Samford holds a 10-1-1 mark over The Citadel dating back to the 2008 season. The Lowcountry Bulldogs claimed their first win in the series, 3-2, on the road on Oct. 18, 2013. Prior to that, The Citadel and Samford worked to a 0-0, double-overtime draw on Oct. 2, 2011. Friday will mark just the second time the two programs have opened the SoCon campaign against each other. The two opened the 2009 SoCon slate in Charleston with Samford claiming a 1-0 win at Washington Light Infantry Field.
SCOUTING The BULLDOGS FROM BIRMINGHAM
Samford, which has claimed the last four SoCon regular-season titles, enters the weekend having scored just six goals on the year en route to a 3-5 record. The Bulldogs have played just three games at home, including a 2-0 win over Kennesaw State. The Bulldogs have played the likes of Auburn at home (L, 4-0), at 15th-ranked Baylor (L, 6-1), Memphis at home (L, 3-0) and at LSU (L, 2-0). Five different Bulldogs have scored this season, led by senior
Korrie Sauder's two goals. Junior
Allie Lourie joins her atop the stats sheet with four points off one goal and a pair of assists. Junior
Erin Bonner is the other Bulldog with a game-winning goal. In the net, Samford has utilized both sophomore
Stephanie Westaway and junior
Sarah Thorne, with Westaway logging close to 700 minutes (689:50) while boasting a 1.83 goals against average to go with 30 saves on the year.
THE HISTORY WITH CHATTANOOGA
Of the nine current Southern Conference opponents, The Citadel has enjoyed the most success against Chattanooga. Since 2001, the Bulldogs have won five games and earned a tie against the Mocs, including winning five of six meetings from Sept. 27, 2008 to Oct. 26, 2014. Overall, the Mocs boast an 11-5-1 mark over the Bulldogs and have won the last three meetings, including a 3-2, double-overtime victory last season in Charleston.
SCOUTING The MOCS
Chattanooga enters the weekend with a 4-4-1 record, including home wins over Alabama A&M and North Alabama, and road victories over Georgia Southern and Troy. The Mocs, which are 2-1-1 at home this season, have scored multiple goals in five games, including three goals in each of the four victories. All four wins have also been shutouts. Sophomore
Chloe Arnold leads the charge with seven goals, 17 points and 25 shots. Senior
Masey Fox is second on the team with 10 points and three goals scored, but leads the Mocs with four assists. Sophomore
Lauren Dluzewski and junior
Bailey Gale have each scored two goals on the year. Between the pipes, Chattanooga has seen both freshman
Ashton Shields and junior
Melia Correa split time with Shields boasting a 3-0-1 record, a 0.47 goals against average and 18 saves. Correa is 1-4 on the year and brings a 2.52 goals against average and 15 saves into the weekend.
COMING UP
Following the weekend on the road, The Citadel returns home for a stretch of three games at WLI Field. The Bulldogs will first welcome UNCG to Charleston on Friday, Sept. 28 before VMI comes to town on Sunday, Sept. 30. The homestand will close with a Friday, Oct. 5 game against Mercer.
