Weekly Preview: 24th-Ranked Bulldogs Open 2019 with Pair of Tough Matches

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The 24th-ranked Citadel mixed rifle team and the women's team will jump back into action this week with matches against a pair of top-10 teams in No. 6 Alaska Fairbanks and 10th-ranked Jacksonville State.

The Bulldogs will host the Nanooks on Wednesday, Jan. 9 for a rare mid-week match before hitting the road for Jacksonville, Alabama, taking on the Gamecocks on Saturday, Jan. 12.

Kellen McAferty and JT Schnering have led the way this season for the Nanooks after Alaska had to replace seven-time All-American Sagen Maddalena, who finished fourth in air rifle and eighth in smallbore at the NCAA Championships last year. Schnering, who has made three NCAA Championship appearances during his career in Fairbanks, and McAferty both boast an 1177 aggregate score on the year.

During the 2018-portion of the season, JSU was led by Mekenna Richardson and David Sink. Richardson posted a season-best 1178 aggregate score on the road on Nov. 3, while Sink's best aggregate came a week later, an 1170 on Nov. 10 at home.

The Bulldogs last competed against outside competition on Nov. 10, putting together one of their best team performances of the season en route to finishing the day with the second-highest aggregate score of the 2018-19 season in a 4580-4547 loss at 18th-ranked North Georgia.

The Bulldogs fired off a 2238 in three-position smallbore and followed that up with a 2309 in air rifle. The 2309 was the second-best air rifle score of the season for the Bulldogs.

The 'Dogs were led by sophomore Max Brabston's 1151, including a second-place 587 in air rifle. Brabston started his day with a 564 in three-position smallbore. The 1151 by Brabston was the best individual aggregate score of the season by a Bulldog, besting his previous best mark of the year by three. His 587 in air rifle was the second-best of the season in the gun for any Bulldog, falling just five points shy of his impressive 592 at VMI (Sept. 22).

Allison Auten (fifth), Leah Wallace (sixth), Izzie Blystone (seventh) and Alexander McAlear (10th) all finished top-10 in aggregate score to help lead the 'Dogs in the strong finish. Emily Perkins, who counted for the Bulldogs in air rifle, posted a 573 in the gun.

Auten ended the day fifth with an 1134, including a 559 in smallbore and a 575 in air. Wallace finished sixth overall with an 1133 (555 in smallbore, 578 in air rifle) and Blystone wrapped up her day with an 1130, including a 560 in smallbore and a 570 in air rifle. McAlear finished his day with an 1121 (547 smallbore, 574 air rifle).

Abby Koger and Tierra Price from The Citadel women's team competed individually. Price fired off a 1017, including a 495 in smallbore and a 522 in air. Koger shot a 986 aggregate score, made up of a 496 in smallbore and a 490 in air rifle.
