CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel women's soccer team's time in the 2019 Southern Conference Women's Soccer Championships continues Saturday, Nov. 2 as the No. 9 seed Bulldogs travel to Birmingham, Alabama to face the No. 1 seed, Samford in a 3 p.m. game.
COMING UP
The winner of Saturday's game will advance to the semifinal round of the tournament. The semifinals and finals will be hosted by UNCG in Greensboro, North Carolina at the UNCG Soccer Stadium Friday, Nov. 8 and Sunday, Nov. 10. The winner will play the winner of Saturday's game between No. 5 Western Carolin and No. 4 Mercer.
FACING A FAMILIAR FOE
For the second season in a row, the Bulldogs advance to play No. 1 seed Samford in the quarterfinals of the tournament. Last season, Samford held on to win 1-0 in Birmingham.
LAST TIME OUT
Despite chilly temperatures and on-again, off-again rain, the ninth-seeded Citadel women's soccer team managed to keep their season alive with a 1-0 win over the No. 8 seed Bucs of ETSU Wednesday evening in the opening round of the 2019 Southern Conference Women's Soccer Championship at Summers-Taylor Stadium.
Suzuka Yosue continued her impressive freshman campaign by scoring the Bulldogs' goal in the 60th minute off an assist from fellow freshman
Marie Le Gallo.
WINS 25 AND 55 FOR TRAQUAIR
The win over ETSU on Wednesday marked the 25
th win at The Citadel for head coach
Ciaran Traquair. It was also the 55
th win overall for Traquair as a head coach.
WINNING A TOURNAMENT GAME IN BACK-TO-BACK SEASONS
The win on Oct. 30 over No. 8 seed ETSU in the opening round of the SoCon Tournament marked the first time in program history that the Bulldogs have won a game in the tournament in back-to-back seasons. It is just the fourth SoCon Tournament win in program history.
SHUTTING OUT THE BUCS
The 1-0 win over ETSU marked the 10
th time this season that the Bucs have been shut. The shutout over ETSU marks the fifth shutout of the season for the Bulldogs. The five shutouts are the most since the 2016 team also posted five shutouts.
SUZU MOVING UP THE RANKS
Yosue scored her fourth goal of the season Wednesday night against ETSU. She is now tied for 15
th in program history for goals scored by a freshman. Yosue now boasts 15 points, moving her into a tie for eighth in program history for points by a freshman.
YOSUE WITH THE GAME WINNER
Yosue has scored two game-winning goals, a mark that has her tied for fourth in program history for game winners by a freshman.
SUZU GETTING SHOTS OFF
Yosue has taken 53 shots on the year, second most on the team to
Hannah Roth's 58. Yosue's 53 shots rank tied for third in program history for shots taken by a freshman.
LE GALLO SETTING UP THE SCORE
Le Gallo recorded her second assist of the season Wednesday at ETSU. She is now tied for 12
th in program history for assists by a freshman. Fellow freshman
Ani Ford also boasts two assists.
ROTH GETTING SHOTS OFF
Roth has taken a team-high 58 shots, third-most in program history by a junior.
THE HISTORY WITH SAMFORD
Samford holds a 13-1-1 all-time record over the Bulldogs, including 2-0 in SoCon Tournament games and 6-1-1 overall in Birmingham. The Citadel's lone win in the series, a 3-2 victory, came back in 2013. The two sides worked to a scoreless, double-overtime draw in 2011. Earlier this season, Samford claimed a 6-0 win over The Citadel in Charleston. Last season, the two teams met in the second round of the 2018 Southern Conference Women's Soccer Championship with No. 1 seed Samford claiming a 1-0 victory after
