No. 9 Bulldogs Fall at No. 1 Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Citadel women's soccer team saw their season come to an end Saturday afternoon, bowing out of the 2019 Southern Conference Women's Soccer Championships with a 5-1 loss to the No. 1 seed, Samford.

SCORING SUMMARY
25' – Kyla Reynolds scored unassisted on a run in front of the goal.
53' – Kylie Gazza scored off assists from Caroline Oreman and Ayssa Frazier.
66' – Mary Raymond scored her first goal of the season off Frazier's second assist of the game with a corner kick.
71' – Raymond scored her second goal of the game, this one an open shot from outside the box.
79' – Keyli Borman scored off a pass from Reynolds to wrap up Samford's scoring.
90' – Kate Manzione scored her second career goal off a set piece from Marie Le Gallo.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Samford controlled the ball for much of the game, logging 17 shots before Suzuka Yosue managed to get off the Bulldogs' first shot, a set piece after she drew a foul five yards outside the box.
  • The home Bulldogs managed to outshoot the visiting Bulldogs 30-6 for the game, including 20-2 in the opening half.
  • The Citadel managed four shots in the second half, including Manzione's goal in the final minute of regulation.
  • Samford held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks, but was whistled for 21 fouls compared to eight by The Citadel.

NOTABLES
  • Le Gallo's assist on Manzione's goal was the third of the season for the Lake Tapps, Washington native. Le Gallo is tied for eighth in program history for assists by a freshman.
  • The Bulldogs ended the season with 31 goals scored, marking the first time in program history the program has scored at least 30 goals in back-to-back seasons.
  • The Bulldogs ended the campaign with five shutouts, tying the program record set by the 2009 squad and matched by the 2016 team.
