Root Heads to Pittsburgh for NCAA Championship

PITTSBURGH, PA. – Senior wrestling cadet-athlete Sawyer Root will head to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania this week to compete in the 2019 NCAA Wrestling Championships March 21-23 at the PPG Paints Arena.
Root reached the NCAA Championships in the 197-weight class on an at-large after finishing second in the Southern Conference Championship. Root dropped the true second match up to auto
"Sawyer is an incredibly hard worker and he has definitely put in all the effort he needed to this year," said assistant coach Cody Cleveland. "I'm very excited for him to showcase himself at Nationals and not have his senior season cut short."
Root currently holds a 31-win record, a new personal best for his time at The Citadel. He has recorded an overall record of 31-13 with 17 decisions, eight major decisions, two technical falls, three pins and one sudden victory. This will be Root's second trip to the NCAA Wrestling Championship.
Root will face No. 11 seed Christian Brunner (23-9) of Purdue, Thursday morning in the opening round.
