Johnson Qualifies for 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Citadel track & field sprinter Josiah Johnson has qualified for the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships for the second time in as many years, it was announced Thursday afternoon.

Johnson once again qualified for the 100-meter dash and will participate in the East Preliminaries hosted this year by the University of North Florida and the Jacksonville Sports Council.

Last season, Johnson finished 31st with a time of 10.41 in the 100-meter dash in the East Preliminaries held in Tampa, Florida.

The top 48 declared athletes in each event qualified for the event, and Johnson sits 33rd on the NCAA East Qualifying list with a 10.32 best time.

The 100-meter dash will be contested at 6:55 p.m. on Thursday, May 23. The top 24 times will advance to race on Friday, May 24 at 6:15 p.m. The top 12 times will then advance to the finals in Austin, Texas at the University of Texas June 5-8.

Johnson was named the Southern Conference Men's Track Athlete of the Month for the month of April. He earned four podium finishes at the SoCon Outdoor Track and Field Championships, winning the 100-meter dash and the 4x100-meter relay and finishing second in the 200-meter dash and third in the 4x400-meter relay.

Johnson, who ran 10.32 in the prelims, won the 100-meter in 10.50 seconds. The senior from Ladson, South Carolina, set a school record with his time of 21.08 in the 200-meter final. Johnson ran the second leg on The Citadel's 4x100 relay, which ran 40.71 to break an 18-year-old school record and defend its event title from 2018, and led off the 4x400 relay, which turned in the sixth-fastest time in school history (3:16.34). Earlier in the month, Johnson won the 100-meter dash at the Bill Carson Invitational and finished fourth in the event at the USC Open and 10th at the Gamecock Invitational.
