Five Bulldogs Score in Season Opening Victory

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Five different Bulldogs scored, including three for the first time in their collegiate careers, as The Citadel women's soccer team cruised to a 5-0 victory over Bob Jones in the season opener.

KEY PLAYS (Scoring Summary)
31' – Marie Le Gallo recorded her first career assist when she played the ball into the six-yard box for the waiting Logan Dix, who finished the play off with her 11th career goal.
37' – Following a Citadel corner kick, Hannah Roth had her initial shot saved by the goalkeeper, but the ball rebounded to the left of goal where Kate Manzione was waiting to clean up for the score.
48' – Mel Mikoy sent a long free kick service onto the Bob Jones side of the field where Dix collected the ball and headed to goal. After being cut off by a defender, Dix played the ball to the waiting Hayley Long who finished for her first career goal.
51' – The ball was batted around in the box and Le Gallo came away with it, turning and sending a strike into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal.
76' – Devyn Nyhart passed the ball into the top of the box to Ellie Burgess who juked a defender and dumped the ball off to Emily Mason who immediately sent a strike into the net.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Citadel outshot Bob Jones 44-3 overall, including 23-0 in the first half.
  • Isabel Flores took the Bulldogs' first shot of the game nearly 1:30 into the game.
  • With just under 5:45 left to play in the first half, lightning caused a pause in the action that lasted over an hour.
  • Once action resumed, Taylor Diggs and Le Gallo managed to get shots off, but neither found the back of the net.
  • The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.

NOTABLES
  • The win was No. 50 overall for head coach Ciaran Traquair as a head coach, and No. 20 in his career at The Citadel.
  • The Bulldogs set a program record with 44 shots in the game. The previous record was 42 set in 2009 in the season opener against Alabama State.
  • The 'Dogs won their season opener for the fourth straight season. It is just the ninth time in program history The Citadel has claimed the season opener.
  • The Bulldogs scored five goals in the season opener for the third straight year. The five goals scored in the opener are the most since the 2009 team opened the season with 14 goals scored against Alabama State.
  • Freshman Yulia Hayes earned her first collegiate start between the pipes and played all 90 minutes, recording two saves.
  • Angelina Martin and Kendall Rossiter split time in goal for Bob Jones with Martin recording 13 saves in over 76 minutes of action.
  • Roth led all players with six shots, including four on frame. Le Gallo and Mason both tallied five shots.

Next Up
The 'Dogs will next head to Savannah, Ga. on Sunday, Aug. 25 for a 6 p.m. game against Georgia Southern. The Citadel will then open the home schedule on Friday, Aug. 30 with a 4 p.m. game against North Dakota.
