CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel women's soccer team opens Southern Conference play with three matches on the road, beginning this weekend at UNCG on Friday, Sept. 27. The 'Dogs will also play at VMI on Sunday, Sept. 29.
WINNING RECORD IN NON-CONFERENCE PLAY
With a 4-2-2 record following the game against Jacksonville, the Bulldogs boast a winning non-conference mark for just the fifth time in program history, and the third time under head coach
Ciaran Traquair. Last season, the Bulldogs went 6-2 in non-conference action after going 5-3 in 2017. The 2010 team went 4-3-1 before opening Southern Conference play and the 2002 team went 5-1-1 against non-SoCon teams.
THE BULLDOGS NATIONALLY
Heading into Southern Conference play, the Bulldogs are currently ranked in the top 50 in NCAA Division I in eight statistical categories. The Citadel is first in shots per game (23.88) and tied for first in shots on goal per game (11.25). The 'Dogs are also 19th in corner kicks per game (7.00), tied for 23rd in assists per game (2.38) and tied for 29th with 19 total assists. The Bulldogs are 30th in points per game (7.13), tied for 32nd in goals scored per game (2.38) and tied for 48th in total points (57).
INDIVIDUALLY IN THE NATION
Junior
Hannah Roth heads into this weekend's games tied for 10th in the nation in shots per game (4.88) and tied for 20th in shots on goal per contest (2.13). Freshman
Suzuka Yosue is tied for 21st in the nation with 0.67 assists per outing.
YOSUE WITH THE ASSIST
Yosue now has four assists on the season, a mark that has her tied for fourth in program history for assists by a freshman.
SPLITTING THE SCORING UP
The Bulldogs have now had 13 different players score at least one goal. Last season, 11 Bulldogs got in on the scoring action.
CONTRERAS WITH THE ASSIST
With her second assist of the season coming Sunday against Jacksonville, junior midfielder
Maria Contreras now boasts seven career assists, moving her up into a tie for sixth in program history. Contreras is tied with fellow junior Roth,
Amy Loughran (2008-11) and
Dianna Martin (2006-09).
MAFER MOVING ON UP
Contreras boasts 17 career points, a mark that has her tied for 19th in program history.
NYHART MAKING MOVES
Sophomore
Devyn Nyhart has broken into the top 15 in program history for three sophomore single-season marks. Nyhart is currently tied for 12th in program history with two goals. She is also tied for 10th with seven points and is tied for eighth with three assists.
SOMOGYI MINDING THE NET
Sophomore goalkeeper
Maddie Somogyi has improved to 2-1-2 with 24 saves. She is currently ninth in program history for saves by a sophomore keeper and is tied for fourth with two wins.
SCORING IN BUNCHES
The Bulldogs' seven goals scored against Columbia International are tied for fifth most in program history. The school record is 14 set against Alabama State in a game during the 2009 campaign. The 'Dogs took 39 shots, tied for fourth in program history. The 'Dogs set the program record with 44 earlier this season against Bob Jones.
CONTRERAS SCORING TWICE
In the game against Columbia International, Contreras became the 23rd Bulldog in program history to notch a multi-goal outing with her two goals.
SHARING THE BALL
Against Columbia International, the Bulldogs recorded eight assists, which are tied for second in program history. The program record is 16 set in the 2009 game against Alabama State.
SETTING A PROGRAM RECORD
With
Paige Davis and
Brooke Cheatham both scoring in the win over Columbia International, the Bulldogs have now had seven first-time collegiate goal scorers this season, setting a new program record. The previous mark was six set by the 2002 team and matched by the 2010 and 2018 squads.
THE HISTORY WITH UNCG
UNCG has won all 18 matchups between the two programs heading into Friday's game. Last season, the Spartans won 5-0 at WLI Field, and in 2017, UNCG claimed a 4-0 win in Greensboro.
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
After starting the season 0-5-1, UNCG has bounced back to win each of the last three games, including a 6-0 road win at Gardner-Webb and a pair of home games by one goal each. The Spartans, who were picked to win the league by the coaches prior to the start of the season, have played the likes of Arkansas, Richmond, Iowa, Davidson and East Carolina and are 2-3 at home. Cienna Rideout has also scored a pair of goals and has added two assists off a team-high 37 shots.
Nicole Souply,
Isabelle Blomdahl and
Kayla Campbell have all scored two goals, while
Jordin Mosley brings three assists into the weekend. In goal,
Abby Buchholz has played just over 439 minutes in seven games, making 14 saves to go along with a 2.46 goals against average. Preseason All-SoCon goalkeeper
Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper has played 338 minutes over four games and made 21 saves, while owning a 1.86 goals against average.
THE HISTORY WITH VMI
VMI holds a 7-4 record over the Bulldogs, including a 4-1 mark in regular-season SoCon games, and a 4-2 mark in games played in Lexington. Last season, the Bulldogs broke a four-game losing skid to the Keydets with a 4-3 victory at WLI Field. The 'Dogs have not won in Lexington since the 2014 campaign.
SCOUTING THE KEYDETS
VMI heads into the weekend with a 1-7-1 record. The lone win on the year came in the second game of the season as the Keydets bested Delaware State 4-0 back on Aug. 29. The only other positive result on the schedule for VMI was a double-overtime, scoreless draw with Davidson. Most recently, the Keydets fell 3-0 at home to Liberty to fall to 0-4 at home. Four different players have scored the Keydets' four goals this season, including
Kiley Cropper,
Whitney Edwards-Roberson,
Maria Vargas and
Maggie Beckman. Cropper and
Sam Fee both have an assist, and Edwards-Roberson leads the team with 20 shots taken. In goal,
Noelle Heilpern has played all 830 minutes with a 1.41 goals against average to go along with 48 saves.
COMING UP
Following the games at UNCG and VMI, the Bulldogs will open the month of October at Mercer on Thursday, Oct. 3. The 'Dogs will then close out the regular season by playing four of their last six games at home.
