Weekend Preview: Bulldogs Set to Compete in JDL Team Challenge Thursday

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Members of The Citadel track and field teams will compete in the JDL Team Challenge on Thursday, Feb. 13.
The meet will begin at 5 p.m. Track events will begin with the 3,000-meter run followed by the 60-meter hurdles, the 60-meter dash, the 400-meter dash, the 800-meter run, the 200-meter dash, the mile run and the 4x400-meter relay. The field events will all get underway at 5 p.m. and will include the high jump, weight throw, pole vault and triple jump.

RECORD BREAKING PART 1
Over the weekend at the South Carolina Invitational, Sam Blumer set the program record for the indoor pole vault with a height of 16' 0.75". Blumer's vault placed him fifth in the invite pole vault event. He broke his own previous record of 15' 11" that he shared with Devin Merrick.
BLUMER PICKS UP WEEKLY AWARD
Blumer has been named the Southern Conference Male Field Athlete of the Week as voted on by the league's coaches, it was announced Wednesday afternoon. Over the weekend, Blumer set the program record for indoor pole vault with a vault of 16' 0.75" (4.90 meters). The mark placed the Greenville, South Carolina native fifth in the invite pole vault at the South Carolina Invitational.
RECORD BREAKING PART 2
On Friday during the South Carolina Invitational, freshman Sam Sharnas set his third program freshman record in as many weeks with a personal record time of 4:23.95 in the mile. The previous freshman record in the mile that Sharnas broke was set in 1978 by Matt Smith with a time of 4:24.00.
Sharnas started his recent streak off by helping the Bulldogs' freshman distance medley relay team to a freshman program record time of 10:36.24 at the VMI Team Challenge. Two weeks ago at the Carolina Challenge, Sharnas set the freshman program record in the men's 5,000-meter race.

COMING UP
Following this week's meet, the Bulldogs will have one final indoor meet during the regular season before the 2020 Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships. The 'Dogs will compete on Saturday, Feb. 22 at the USC Indoor Open. The Bulldogs will then head to Lexington, Virginia for the conference meet Saturday, Feb. 29 – Sunday, March 1.

- Merrick finished eighth over the weekend with a season-best vault of 15' 5".
- Lindsay Pierce finished third in the open pole vault with a season-best height of 13' 11.25".
- Prince Howard-Whitaker record a personal record of 44' 4.25" in the shot put.
- Jon Barrett Lewis recorded a pair of PRs in the shot put (42' 3.25") and weight throw (43' 10.5").
- Aidan Richter matched his personal record in the 800-meter race with a time of 1:57.80.
- In the 400-meter dash, Kane Duncan set a PR with a time of 50.83.
