Basketball Falls on the Road at UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Citadel basketball team dropped a Southern Conference game to UNC Greensboro Wednesday night. The Spartans used a 22-3 run in the middle of the second half to notch the 88-68 victory inside the Greensboro Coliseum.

KEY STATS
  • The score was tied five times in the first 9:14 of the game as the two teams traded made 3-pointers and points.
  • Kaiden Rice opened the game by hitting his first two 3-pointers just over a minute in, and Fletcher Abee hit his first trey of the game as the 'Dogs started off hot.
  • With 12:04 left in the first half, Kyrin Galloway scored off a dunk to put the Spartans up for the first time in the game. After Derek Webster, Jr. tied the game back up at 13-13, Angelo Allegri put UNCG back up for good.
  • With just under eight minutes left in the opening period, Rice converted a pair of free throws to pull the 'Dogs back to within one, 20-19.
  • After Greensboro stretched the lead out to double digits, 29-19 with 5:26 to play, Abee took matters into his own hands, converting a trio of 3-pointers in the span of less than a minute to pull The Citadel back to within one at 29-28.
  • UNCG managed to stretch the lead back out to eight, 40-32 by halftime.
  • The 'Dogs opened the second half by scoring the first four points, cutting into the Spartan's lead.
  • With 16:14 left in regulation, Abee scored off a layup to set the score at 45-42, but UNCG went on a 22-3 run over the next nearly seven minutes to break the game wide open.
  • Both teams shot over 45.0% from the field with the Spartans connecting on 45.3% (29-64) of their attempts, while the Bulldogs connected on 47.1% (24-51) of their attempts. UNCG was helped by shooting 56.7& (17-30) in the second half.
  • The Spartans scored 20 of their points off the Bulldogs' 21 turnovers.
  • Abee led the Bulldogs in scoring with 16 points off 6-for-9 (.667) shooting, including going 4-for-6 (.667) from beyond the 3-point arc.
  • Webster scored a career-high 14 points off 5-for-8 (.625) shooting, and the Tampa, Florida native added five rebounds and a team-high three assists.
  • Kaelon Harris ended his night with 11 points, all in the second half, and Rice scored 10 points.
  • Keyshaun Langley led a quartet of Spartans in double-digit scoring with a game-high 17.

NOTES
  • With his 16 points scored, Abee moved up into 14th in program history for points scored by a freshman with 261 points on the year.
  • Abee converted four 3-pointers Wednesday night. He now boasts 58 on the year, moving him up to tie Matt Van Scyoc (2012-13) for sixth in program history.

The Bulldogs will return home to host VMI for The Citadel's annual Pack the Mac game on Saturday, Feb. 8. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

CLEAR BAG POLICY
Fans attending ticketed athletic events at The Citadel this year are reminded of the new clear bag policy that has been implemented. Under the policy, fans will be allowed to bring with them a clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bag that does not exceed 12 inches by 6 inches by 12 inches, or a one-gallon plastic bag (such as Ziploc or Hefty bags). The bags may have a logo on one side that is no larger than 4.5 inches by 3.4 inches. Bags carrying a properly sized logo of other teams or venues are permitted.
