Weekend Preview: Track and Field Heads to South Carolina Invitational

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel track and field teams will head back to Columbia this weekend to take part in the South Carolina Invitational. The meet will run from Friday, Feb. 7 through Saturday, Feb. 8.
The meet will get underway Friday at 10 a.m. with the women's weight throw. Friday's track events will commence at 11 a.m. with the women's 60-meter dash. Saturday's field events begin with the men's open pole vault at 10 a.m., while the men's open 5,000-meter race also begins at 10 a.m.

RECORD BREAKING
Last week at the Carolina Challenge, freshman distance runner Sam Sharnas set the program freshman record in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:16.30. The previous record was set by Andrew Cawood in 1998. It marked the second straight week where Sharnas was a member of a record-breaking effort as he was a member of the freshman distance medley relay team that set the program freshman record in that event the week before at the VMI Team Challenge.

Next week, the Bulldogs will compete at the JDL Team Challenge hosted by Wake Forest on Thursday, Feb. 13. The 'Dogs will then return to Columbia for the final indoor meet of the regular season, the USC Indoor Open, before heading to the 2020 Southern Conference Indoor Championships hosted by VMI Feb. 29 – March 1.

- Senior Jessy Page finished second in the women's weight throw with a toss of 51' 1.75".
- Sophomore Mya Dollard posted a leap of 5' 1" in the high jump, finishing ninth.
- Freshman Heidi Fortin raced her way to a 10th-place time in the women's 5K, posting the program's fifth-fastest time in the event with a time of 18:48.01.
- Junior Devin Merrick finished sixth in the men's pole vault invite with a height of 15' 5", while junior Sam Blumer finished seventh with a similar height.
- Junior Lindsay Pierce finished seventh in the men's pole vault open with a height of 13' 7.25".
- Freshman Prince Moody finished sixth in the high jump with a leap of 6' 2", and junior Kenya Pinckney finished seventh with a jump of 6' 0".
- Senior Prince Howard-Whitaker ended his weekend seventh in the weight throw with a toss of 47' 1.5".
