THE SET PIECE (ABOUT THE CITADEL)
The Bulldogs return 21 letterwinners from last year's squad, including 11 players who saw significant time in the starting lineup. Included in the ranks are seven seniors, eight juniors and six sophomores. The Citadel added 10 newcomers to the team during the offseason, including three graduate transfers.
WINNING A TOURNAMENT GAME IN BACK-TO-BACK SEASONS
Last season, the Bulldogs went on the road to No. 8 seed ETSU and picked up a thrilling, 1-0 win over the Buccaneers in the opening round of the SoCon Championships. The win over the Bucs marked the first time in program history that the Bulldogs won a game in the tournament in back-to-back seasons after claiming a come-from-behind win in 2018 at Wofford.
SHUTTING OUT THE COMPETITION
Last season, the Bulldogs' goalkeepers recorded five shutouts, tying the program record set by the 2009 squad and matched by the 2016 team.
FIRST-TIME GOAL SCORERS
The Bulldogs had eight players record their first-ever collegiate goals last season, setting the program record. The previous record was six set by the 2002 team and matched by the 2010 and 2018 squads.
SPREADING THE SCORING AROUND
In 2019, the Bulldogs had a program-record 15 different players score at least one goal. The 15 different scorers led the Southern Conference as UNCG boasted 14, while Samford and Mercer each had 12. Eight of the Bulldogs' 15 goal scorers tallied multiple goals, matching Chattanooga, Mercer, UNC Greensboro and Western Carolina for second in the league. Nine of Samford's 12 goal scorers notched multiple goals.
RETURNING THE OFFENSE
The Citadel returns 77.4% of its offensive output from a season ago, including 11 players who scored at least one goal. The returning scorers are led by senior
Logan Dix, who found the back of the net five times last season, sophomore
Suzuka Yosue, who had four goals and seven assists, and senior
Maria Contreras, who chipped in three goals.
DIXIE MOVING UP IN THE RECORD BOOK
Dix enters her senior season eighth in program history with 15 career goals, and tied for 11
th with six career assists. She is ninth in program history with 36 points, and sits 13
th with 89 shots.
YOSUE BACK FOR MORE
Sophomore striker Yosue returns to The Citadel after earning All-Southern Conference Second-Team honors to go along with SoCon All-Freshman Team honors last season. A native of Osaka, Japan, Yosue was the first Bulldog women's soccer player to earn All-SoCon honors since 2014, and followed that up by becoming the first Bulldog since 2010 to earn Southern Conference All-Tournament Team plaudits during the SoCon Soccer Championships.
THE HISTORY WITH GEORGIA SOUTHERN
The Citadel and Georgia Southern have squared off 14 times on the pitch with the Eagles holding a 10-4 record over the Bulldogs. Last season's meeting in Savannah marked the first game between the two former SoCon foes since the 2013 campaign.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
Last season, the Eagles went 6-11-1, including 4-3-1 at home, in head coach Josh Moffet's first season at the helm. The 2020 roster for GS includes just three seniors compared to eight juniors, six sophomores and 13 freshmen. Included in the returners are seven of the Eagles' 11 starters against the Bulldogs last season. The Eagles will look to replace starting goalkeeper
Lauren Karinshak, who made six saves in last season's meeting, as well as
Frida Brattum, who led the team with eight goals a season ago, including one against the 'Dogs. Three of Brattum's goals were game winners. Despite losing Brattum's eight scores, the Eagles do return 52.9% of their scoring, including
Marcela Montoya,
Karin Winka and
Nora Falnes, all of who scored two goals.
THE HISTORY WITH MERCER
The Citadel has never beaten Mercer in seven tries dating back to the 2014 campaign. This fall, the two will be meeting in a pair of non-conference matchups, including a game in Charleston on Thursday, Sept. 17, and one in Macon on Saturday, Oct. 10. Last season, the Bulldogs entered halftime up 1-0, and went up 2-1 early in the second half when Dix scored off an assist by
Devyn Nyhart, but the Bears managed to score three goals in the closing 30 minutes to secure the win.
SCOUTING THE BEARS
After going 16-4 last season, including posting a 7-2 mark in SoCon play, the Bears return 21 players, including nine starters. Mercer returns 89.5% of its offense from a season ago, including seven of the eight players who scored multiple goals last season. Head Coach
Tony Economopoulos returns his top two goal scorers in sophomores
Nicole Icen and
Amaya Evans. Last season, Icen scored 10 times, while Evans chipped in seven scores. The Bears also return starting goalkeeper
Jordyn Ebert, who made 102 saves a season ago, including seven in the game against the Bulldogs.
