Volleyball Battles at Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Citadel volleyball team got a team-high eight kills from Sharlissa de Jesus in a 3-1 (13-25, 16-25, 18-25) loss at Virginia Tech Thursday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • VT got off to a fast start as they rattled off eight points to start the match. The Bulldogs were able to put an end to the run with a kill from Makaya Middleton.
  • The Citadel started to get back into the set with a kill from Mellanie King and a service ace from Faith Justice.
  • Sharlissa de Jesus put together back-to-back points with a kill and a service ace.
  • The Citadel pulled within seven points after Middleton delivered a kill and Maddy Cardenas and King combined on a block.
  • The Bulldogs got off to a better start in the second set after back-to-back kills from King and Cardenas gave the 'Dogs a 2-1 lead.
  • VT responded with a 6-0 to gain the lead. Another block from Cardenas and King pulled The Citadel within three points.
  • The best start to a set came in the third as the Bulldogs got kills from Alicia Roberts and Middleton, and took advantage of a trio of errors from the Hokies to take a 5-3 lead.
  • The Citadel would push its advantage to 9-5 before VT went on a run to take the lead for good.
  • The Bulldogs continued to battle throughout the set, but were never able to get within six points.
     
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Sharlissa de Jesus led the offense with eight kills on 24 swings.
  • Mellanie King added seven kills and Makaya Middleton registerd five.
  • King raised her career total to 818 kills and passed Marina Daniel for 12th on the all-time list.
  • Megan Fuhr handed out 21 assists and recorded seven digs.
  • Alicia Roberts recorded a pair of kills in her first action since early in the 2019 season.
