CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel women's soccer team welcomes Atlantic Coast Conference foe Pittsburgh to Washington Light Infantry (WLI) Field for a pair of games this week.
The Bulldogs and Panthers will first tangle on Thursday, Sept. 24 before closing out the month of September on Sunday, Sept. 27. Sunday's game has been moved up to 11 a.m., while Thursday's game remains a 4 p.m. kickoff. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+ and the WatchESPN app.
COMING UP
The Bulldogs will close out the Fall 2020 portion of the 2020-21 season with four games in the month of October. The 'Dogs will begin the month with a neutral-site game in Greer against Appalachian State on Oct. 1 before traveling up to Belmont, North Carolina to face Belmont Abbey on Oct. 3. The Citadel will take on Mercer in a second non-conference game in Macon on Oct. 10, and will close out the fall with a home game against Georgia Southern on Oct. 16.
THE BULLDOGS AGAINST NATIONALLY-RANKED FOES
Thursday's game against the Pitt Panthers will mark just the fourth time in program history The Citadel has taken on a team ranked in the top 25, and the first time since the 2013 campaign. With Pitt ranked No. 12 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, it will mark the highest ranked opponent the Bulldogs have faced since taking on No. 5 Florida State on the road on Oct. 25, 2005. In 2010, the 'Dogs faced UNC Greensboro when the Spartans were ranked No. 21 (Oct. 8), and in 2013 the Bulldogs kicked off the season at No. 17 Maryland (Aug. 23)
THE BULLDOGS AGAINST THE ACC
When the 'Dogs and Panthers face off on Thursday, it will mark the fourth meeting between The Citadel and a team from the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Bulldogs have faced off against Clemson (2011), Florida State (2005) and North Carolina State (2012), with all three claiming wins over the Bulldogs.
THE BULLDOGS AGAINST POWER FIVE SCHOOLS
The Citadel will be facing a team from the Power Five ranks for just the seventh time in program history, but Thursday's match with Pitt will mark the first time since 2013 that the 'Dogs have taken on an opponent of that level. The Bulldogs have faced Clemson, Florida State, Maryland, North Carolina State, Ole Miss (2011) and South Carolina (2006) each once with the previous six meetings going in favor of the opposition. Thursday will mark the first time a program from that level has traveled to compete against the Bulldog women on WLI Field.
EARNING A POSITIVE RESULTS AGAINST MERCER
The 1-1, double-overtime draw with Mercer on Sept. 17 marked the first-ever positive result for the Bulldogs against the Bears. Mercer entered the game 7-0 all-time against the 'Dogs.
DIXIE BURSTING INTO THE TOP FIVE
On Sept. 17, senior forward
Logan Dix scored the 18th goal of her career, and third of the season. Dix moved up a spot in the program record book to tie
Lauren Merchant (2002-05) for fifth. Her next goal will give her fifth outright, and she is just three goals away from fourth.
MAKING MOVES
With her two points against Mercer, Dix now boasts 42 career points (18 goals, 6 assists), moving her up to sole possession of sixth in program history. She is just three points away from cracking the top five.
DIXIE WITH THE GAME-WINNER
Dix has two game-winning goals already this season, giving her five for her career. The mark has her tied for second in program history.
WIN THE OPENER
The 2-1 win over Georgia Southern in the 2020 season opener marked the fifth straight season that the Bulldogs have won the opening game of a campaign. The Citadel defeated UNC Asheville 2-0 at home in
Ciaran Traquair's first season at the helm (2016). They then defeated Hampton 5-3 in 2017, Mississippi Valley State 5-2 in a neutral-site match in 2018, and bested Bob Jones 5-0 last season.
WHAT THE WIN OVER GEORGIA SOUTHERN MEANT
The 2-1 win over Georgia Southern in the season opener was the first victory over the Eagles since Oct. 7, 2012, when the Bulldogs defeated Georgia Southern 4-2 on the road.
FRESHMAN CONTRIBUTING EARLY
The Bulldogs played four freshmen in the season opener at Georgia Southern, including
Jess Newton,
Zoey Conrad and
McKenna Falarski all getting the start.
Ryleigh Jenkins also saw action during the game.
SUZU WITH THE ASSIST
Sophomore
Suzuka Yosue recorded her eighth career assist in the Bulldogs' 2-1 win over Georgia Southern. The Osaka, Japan native moved up into sole possession of seventh all-time in program history for career assists. Her next assist will tie her with senior
Hannah Roth, as well as
Nicole Martinoli (2007-10) and Merchant.
THE HISTORY WITH PITTSBURGH
This week's pair of games will mark the first time The Citadel and Pitt will have squared off on the soccer pitch in women's soccer.
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
Pitt, under third-year head coach
Randy Waldrum, enters the week having received its first-ever top-25 ranking in the United Soccer Coaches' Poll, released Tuesday afternoon. The Panthers are 4-0-0 overall, and 1-0-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, with two road wins over Appalachian State, as well as a home victory over Syracuse and a road win at Navy. The Panthers defeated App State by a combined score of 11-1 over the opening weekend of the season, including a 4-0 win in the season-opener, and a 7-1 win three days later. Pitt opened the ACC slate on Sept. 17 with a 2-0 win over the Orange.
PITT INDIVIDUALLY
Pitt is led in scoring by sophomore
Amanda West, who has picked up right where she left off last season. In 2019, West led the team with 10 goals, including four game winners, and nine assists. She had a team-high 55 shots, including 36 on frame. This season, West leads the way with four goals and three assists off 20 shots. West has received help from fellow sophomore
Lea Pais in the form of three goals, and junior
Anna Rico, who has scored twice. Five other Panthers have scored this season. In between the pipes, junior
Katherine Robinson has started all four games, playing just over 307 minutes. She boasts a 0.00 goals against average, but has only had to make six saves.
