CHARLESTON, S.C. - After an eight-game slate in the fall, The Citadel is finally set to begin its spring soccer season on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. as it travels to face in-state foe Anderson.
Since the Bulldogs closed the fall season with a 3-0 victory over Georgia Southern on Oct. 16, 121 days have elapsed, but the 'Dogs are ready to take the field for their first-ever regular season spring matches. The Citadel will carry over a 4-2-2 record from the fall season as spring action begins.
Logan Dix led the way offensively for The Citadel in the fall, tallying seven goals and scoring in five of the squad's eight matches. Dix netted a pair of two-goal outings, scoring both in the 2-1 win over Georgia Southern on Sept. 14 and another pair in the team's first-ever victory over Mercer on Oct. 9, downing the Bears 3-2.
Suzuka Yosue became the first Bulldog since 2013 to be selected to the preseason All-Southern Conference Team after dishing out five assists during the fall. Despite being only a sophomore, her 12 career assists are already tied for third on The Citadel's all-time career chart in that category. In the fall, four of Yosue's five assists came in the final two matches, and she assisted on three of the Bulldogs' four match-winning goals.
The Citadel was picked seventh in the preseason SoCon coaches' poll, its highest selection in that poll since being picked third prior to the 2011 campaign. The Bulldogs will carry 90 victories in program history into the spring as The Citadel quickly approaches the 100-win milestone.
Anderson dropped its lone exhibition contest of the spring, falling 5-0 at Furman on Feb. 9. The Paladins took an early 2-0 lead on goals in the third and eighth minutes and locked down the Trojans from there to secure the shutout.
Head Coach
Ciaran Traquair spent two seasons as the head coach of the Trojans prior to joining The Citadel in January 2016, leading Anderson to a program-record 14 victories in 2015 as the Trojans finished with the No. 8 ranking in the final NSCAA Southeast Region poll.
Following Sunday's bout, The Citadel will return to WLI Field for the first time this spring next Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. to host Jacksonville. That will kick off a quick two-match homestand as the Bulldogs will remain at home to face North Florida on Tuesday, Feb. 23 as well.
