CHARLESTON, S.C. – Riding a program-record six-match unbeaten streak, The Citadel will conclude the non-conference portion of its spring slate on Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. when it welcomes North Florida to WLI Field.
As with all of The Citadel's home matches this spring, Tuesday's contest will be broadcast live on ESPN+ from WLI Field.
The Bulldogs (6-2-2) are off to a perfect 2-0 start in the spring, defeating Anderson 4-1 on Feb. 14 before knocking off Jacksonville in a tight 1-0 battle last Friday afternoon at Wilson Field. A mad scramble in the box following a corner kick in the 31st minute provided the lone goal of the afternoon as
Hannah Roth settled the ball and
Logan Dix fired past the Dolphins' keeper for what would prove to be the decisive goal.
Defensively, The Citadel battled through the cold and rainy conditions to limit Jacksonville to only two shots on the afternoon on Friday, the fewest that it has allowed in a game since holding Columbia International to a single shot on Sept. 19, 2019.
Jess Newton played the full match between the posts and recorded her third solo shutout of the season, already only one shy of The Citadel's career record in that category despite being a freshman.
Dix, who has scored in both spring matches thus far, has nine goals across 10 matches this season, the fourth-most of any Division I player in the nation in 2020-21 and also the sixth-most in a single season in program history. The senior's 20 points are also tied for the seventh-most in a single season in The Citadel's history and are the most by any Bulldog since the 2014 campaign.
With her shutout on Friday, Newton dropped her goals against average to 0.89 for the season, well under the current program record of 1.34 set by Whitney Nave during the 2009 season; the freshman has allowed one goal or fewer in seven of her nine appearances this year.
North Florida (2-0) picked up wins over fellow Florida schools Jacksonville and FIU to open the season but has not competed since Feb. 12 after it had matches against Kennesaw State and Georgia Southern cancelled. The Ospreys' high-flying offense is led by Thais Reiss and Ariana Munoz, who have combined to score five of the team's seven goals; Reiss has also added a pair of assists to lead the team in points with eight.
In goal, Mercedes Sapp has played all but 13 minutes in the opening pair of matches and has conceded just once in the 3-1 victory over FIU. Sapp came up big for the Ospreys just before halftime against the Panthers, saving a penalty kick to deny FIU an equalizer going into the break.
The Ospreys lead the all-time series against The Citadel by a 3-1 margin, but the Bulldogs got their first victory in the most recent meeting, defeating North Florida, 3-2, in Charleston on Aug. 19, 2018. In that match, Dix tallied the second goal for the Bulldogs, and
Mel Mikoy picked up a pair of assists off of set pieces in the victory.
With its non-conference slate in the books following Tuesday's match, The Citadel will have nine days off before heading out on the road to begin Southern Conference action with a pair of matches next weekend at Wofford (Friday, March 5 at 3 p.m.) and Furman (Sunday, March 7 at 2 p.m.). At Wofford, the Bulldogs will be seeking to win their SoCon opener for the first time since the 2010 campaign.
