JACKSONVILLE, Fla. –
Sam Blumer cleared a height of 15-11 (4.85m) on his first attempt on Wednesday afternoon, tying for 35th in the pole vault at the NCAA East Regional to bring the 2021 track and field season to a close for The Citadel.
Blumer well outperformed his initial seed of 41st in the event and finished above competitors from schools such as Louisville, Auburn, Ohio State and LSU.
Though Blumer fell just shy of his personal-best mark of 16-7.5 (5.07m), the senior capped a strong season that saw him claim the silver medal in both the indoor and outdoor editions of the SoCon Track and Field Championships. Aside from Wednesday's regional, Blumer placed in the top 10 in each of his eight other meets across the indoor and outdoor seasons this year, including five podium finishes.
Blumer was The Citadel's first representative at the East Regional since Josiah Johnson competed in the 100m dash in the 2019 competition.
Alabama's Ryan Lipe and Kentucky's Keaton Daniel claimed joint top honors in the event after each vaulted to a height of 17-6.5 (5.35m) on their first attempts.
