CHARLESTON, S.C. – For only the second time in program history, The Citadel has two selections to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team for basketball as Hayden Brown and Fletcher Abee earned the honors as announced by the organization on Thursday afternoon.
Â
Brown and Abee are the fifth and sixth overall selections in school history and are the first pair of teammates selected in the same year since P.J. Horgan and Ashton Moore in 2014-15. The Citadel's most recent selection, Derrick Henry in 2015-16, went on to receive Third Team Academic All-America honors following his All-District selection.
Â
This year, The Citadel is one of only four Division I programs with multiple All-District selections, alongside Western Kentucky, Iowa and Stanford. Only three other Southern Conference student-athletes were recognized, with Wofford's Storm Murphy, VMI's Kamdyn Curfman and Western Carolina's Matt Halvorsen also receiving the honors.
Â
Brown was a consensus First Team All-SoCon selection after becoming the first Bulldog since 1970-71 to average a double-double, finishing with 18.8 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. The Greer, S.C., native started in all 24 games in which he appeared and finished the season with 10 20-point games, including a career-best 37 points in The Citadel's 92-87 victory over Chattanooga on Jan. 9. Brown also starred against Columbia International on Dec. 7, pulling down a modern-era record 21 rebounds to go alongside 31 points. In the classroom, Brown owns a 3.528 GPA with a degree in Business Administration and is pursuing a leadership certificate in his graduate classes.
Â
Abee built on his strong freshman campaign from 2019-20 and finished third on the team with 12.4 points per game, starting all 23 games that he played. A dangerous sharpshooter from three-point range, Abee shot 37.1 percent from beyond the arc with 59 makes and already ranks 13th in program history with 139 career three-pointers. The Morganton, N.C., native closed the season on a hot streak, reaching double digits in each of his last six games and averaging 17.5 points per game in The Citadel's two SoCon Tournament outings. Abee sports a perfect 4.0 GPA with a major in Business Administration.
Â
This year's CoSIDA Academic All-America honorees are currently set to be announced on Friday, May 28. The Citadel is a member of CoSIDA's District 4, comprised of programs located in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Puerto Rico.
