Hutchins Twirls Gem in Season Finale

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Citadel right hander Ben Hutchins had the best game of his career as the right hander struck out a career-high 10 over 7.0 innings in the Bulldogs season-ending, 2-1 loss to Mercer Friday night in the Southern Conference Tournament at Fluor Field.

How it Happened
  • Mercer got on the board in the first inning on a two-run single off the bat of David Burke.
  • The Bulldogs got a run back in the second inning after Wells Sykes singled to start the inning. With two outs, Garrett Dill and Dylan Costa walked to load the bases. Luke Montenery was hit by a pitch to score Sykes.

  • Ben Hutchins had a career day on the mound as he struck out a career-best 10. He struck out at least one hitter in six of the seven innings, including the side in the first.
  • Hutchins also fanned two in the third and seventh innings.
  • He allowed just two runs, one earned, on four hits in suffering the tough-luck loss.
  • Fisher Paulsen pitch two-thirds of an inning, and Conner Cummiskey closed out the inning with a strikeout.
  • Luke Montenery had the only RBI when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
  • Tilo Skole, Travis Lott, Wells Sykes and Garrett Dill each had base hits.
  • Jackson Kelley (7-0) picked up the win in relief after tossing 7.1 shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out seven.
