Soccer Wraps Up Regular Season on Sunday

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel women's soccer team wraps up regular season play on Sunday, October 22 when it welcomes the Mercer University Bears to WLI Field for a 2 p.m. Southern Conference match.

LAST WEEK:
  • The first-place Western Carolina University Catamounts scored in the 17th and 47th minutes before adding another goal late on their way to a 3-0 win at WLI Field last Thursday.
  • The Citadel led 1-0 at halftime and 2-0 early into the second half but a Wofford penalty kick in the 86th minute knotted the match at 2-2 as the Bulldogs left Spartanburg with a draw on Sunday afternoon.
BEARS BREAKDOWN:
  • Mercer enters the last match of the SoCon slate on a three-game losing streak and in a tie with UNCG for the sixth seed, the last spot eligible to earn a first-round bye in the conference tournament.
  • The Bears sit second in the conference in scoring at 2.17 goals per game, being led by Jada Moorman and Larkin Thomason who are tied for first in the league with 10 goals each.
  • The Mercer defense ranks in the middle of the pack in SoCon play with a 1.38 GAA while surrendering the second most corner kicks (47) and third most shots (127).
BULLDOGS BIO
  • The Bulldogs draw with Wofford on Sunday was their sixth of the year, adding to the program record for draws in a season, besting the previous mark of three (2020, 2011).
  • The Citadel currently sits in the 10th and final spot in the SoCon standings and needs a win and a VMI loss or tie to move up to ninth in the table. Regardless of the outcome of the Mercer match, the Bulldogs are guaranteed to be on the road for the first-round match of the SoCon conference tournament.
  • Nora Sampson has started 8-of-9 SoCon matches for the Bulldogs, ranking second among goalkeepers with 42 saves.
 
After Sunday's match, The Citadel will await the announcement of its opponent for the 2023 SoCon Women's Soccer Championship First Round match, scheduled for Tuesday, October 24th.
