LEXINGTON, KY. – The Citadel volleyball team has been awarded the 2023 USMC/ AVCA Team Academic Award, as announced on Thursday afternoon.
The United States Marine Corps and the American Volleyball Coaches Association announced today that 1,332 collegiate and high school volleyball teams have earned the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award this season. This marks an all-time record number of programs honored for their academic achievements. The award, initiated in the 1992–93 academic year, honors volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade-point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale or 4.1 on a 5.0 scale.
The Citadel volleyball team had a 3.520 team GPA for the year, which included two members of the program receiving Southern Conference Commissioner Medals and six members making the Southern Conference Honor Roll.
"Our team strives for a 3.5 GPA every year, which is no easy feat given the diverse range of fields we cover, including engineering, bio-medical, nursing, and more," said head coach
Dave Zelenock. "Additionally, our students are tasked with completing 20 credits per semester and have military obligations to fulfill. Despite these challenges, we proudly announce that our team has again earned this prestigious award".
